Npc double battle confusion.

I was wondering why some double battles don't work. I'm in the 7th gym of hoenn and I know that gym runs on double battles. But when I step in front of 2 trainers I battle them 1on 1 then I fight the next guy beside me. What's up with that?

Not all npcs that are together are double fights. Sometimes happens of you getting for example between 2 NPCs and fighting one first then the other after. Like those 2:

But if I remember correctly wasn't that a thing in gen 3. To teach players that this gym is a psychic double battle team?

It was. The actual feature was that it turns into a double battle when two trainers lock their sights on you at the same time. I noticed this too when I played through. As of now, only the actual double battlers can double battle.

Double battle engine from Emerald doesn't work in PokeMMO and I don't think making it happen is on the priority list. Personally, I love that feature but it's not like I can't live without it.
