as in do the core game mechanics apply and "step grinding" just takes longer, or is the only way to spend poke cash and sacrifice the parents?

To answer your title, no there isn't. MMOs need a money sink and breeding is a huge one here. Grinding is part of Pokemon, and moreso a part of PokeMMO. It'd also be inefficient to have someone exploit the same pair of perfect IV pokemon over and over to make whatever comps they need.
