How the Data Was Collected

Most people are just here for the data, so I'm putting the parts that are less important into spoilers.

Redacted Fighters

"How did you fight the gym leaders?" "What's the best team for the gyms?" "Is this a good Pokémon to use?" This is the team I used. Use your knowledge of basic match ups to decide who to throw into a fight. Additionally, @Bestfriends made this guide for battling the gym leaders. Using it, you should be able to farm them no problem.

"Why do you have X instead of Y?" "Why don't you use this move?" "Why are the stats lower than usual?"

This is the team I went through the story with. They can defeat the gym leaders without any trouble, so I see no reason to change them. They don't have perfect IVs, movesets, or anything similar. In fact, some of them even have detrimental natures. Ultimately the answer is that I don't care enough to put together a competitive team. Their problems actually helped me make this guide as I'll discuss in a moment.

Second verse, same as the first. Aphrodite's purpose was to find out what abilities the opponents had if they weren't made obvious to me. I didn't assume who had what abilities aside from Chlorophyll, Swift Swim, or Pokémon whose abilities I could narrow down to a single one because I wanted to be certain.

The Gym Leaders

Everyone has five separate teams that they may draw from. I battled the gym leaders once a day to find out what team was present. I tried battling at the same time every day or starting with the same Pokemon only to find that the teams changed despite this. I spent 80 days making my Kanto guide and could find no discernible pattern. The gym leaders do not use the same teams depending on the day of the week. However, I noticed that if I don't defeat one team on a certain day, that same team will reappear on the second or third day. As far as I know, gym leaders cycle through their team in specific orders. I just don't know what that order is.

With all that said, allow me to introduce the format for the Gym Leaders

Speed the Pokemon is faster than <Speed< Speed the Pokemon is slower than

Damage based on health or deals a fixed amount, Damage based on Attack, Damage based on Special Attack, Non-damaging move

Moves in bold hit multiple Pokémon

I have no way of knowing the stats of an opponent. All I can do is tell you whether they are faster than one of my own Pokemon or slower than another. Some Pokemon out-speed all of mine while others are so slow that I out-speed all of them.

"How do I use this guide?"

The teams are organized based on what slot they are in the gym leader's party. For instance, Roxanne's first team has Gigalith, Archeops, and Carracosta. This means she'll open with Gigalith and Archeops (all gym rematches are double battles at the time of making this guide). This does not mean she'll throw in Carracosta after her first Pokemon has been defeated. If you look at the top left where you see her team members, it means the third ball will always contain Carracosta.

Look at the gym leader you're battling. Look for the team that starts with the same Pokemon that they started with. If you're battling Roxanne and she started out with Tyranitar and Cradily, then you're fighting Roxanne 3. The teams are placed in collapsible spoilers so that the guide will load faster and mobile users can scroll easier.

Need help? You can use a Pokémon that have weather altering abilities to remove the sandstorm circling the opponent's team. The sandstorm raises the special defense of all Rock-type Pokémon by 50%. A Golduck/Psyduck with the ability Cloud Nine is advised.

Gigalith is a Rock type. She's weak to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water, and Grass attacks.

Archeops is Rock/Flying. She's weak to Rock, Steel, Water, Electric, and Ice attacks but immune to Ground moves. Additionally, because of her ability, lowering her health below half cuts her Attack down to 50%.

Carracosta is Water/Rock. Because of her ability, Grass attacks only deal 3x damage rather than their usual 4x. Furthermore,  Fighting, Ground, and Electric attacks only deal 1.5x damage rather than their usual 2x. Additionally, the Rindo Berry she carries will cause the first Grass attack that hits her to deal 50% less damage.

Cradily is Rock/Grass. She's weak to Fighting, Bug, Steel, and Ice attacks.

Aggron and Probopass are Steel/Rock and Rock/Steel, respectively. They're 4x more susceptible to Fighting and Ground attacks, weak to Water attacks, and immune to Poison moves.

Staraptor is Normal/Flying. He's weak to Rock, Ice, and Electric attacks.

Breloom is Grass/Fighting. He's 4x more susceptible to Flying and weak to Poison, Fire, Psychic, and Ice attacks.

Need help? As Bestfriends pointed out to me, everyone in this set has a Focus Sash. No one will go down in one hit unless you have an entry level hazard or a multi-hit move. A Pokémon with the move Magic Room can help mitigate this nuisance.

Need help? The entire team has White Herbs, one use items which will reset any status that is lowered. For example, putting out a Gyarados with Intimidate will lower the opponents' attack stats. However, the White Herbs will restore them. The solution is to either use a Pokémon that knows Magic Room or lower the stats multiple times.

Torkoal, Arcanine, Flareon and Rapidash are Fire types. They're weak to Ground, Rock, and Water attacks.

Chandelure is Ghost/Fire. She's weak to Dark, Ghost, Water, Rock, and Ground attacks but immune to Normal and Fighting moves.

Houndoom is Dark/Fire. He's weak to Fighting, Ground, Rock, and Water attacks but immune to Psychic moves.

Flareon's Passho Berry will cause the first Water attack that hits her to deal 50% less damage.

Need help? As Bestfriends pointed out to me, Norman uses a lot of Pokémon that know Intimidate. It would be wise to use Pokémon who use Special moves against him.

Slaking, Stantler, Stoutland, Granbull, and Tauros are all Normal types. They're weak to Fighting attacks and immune to Ghost moves.

Staraptor is Normal/Flying. He's weak to Rock, Electric, and Ice attacks but immune to Ground and Ghost moves.

Slaking, Linoone, and Blissey are all Normal types. They're weak to Fighting attacks and immune to Ghost moves. Because of his item, the first Fighting attack used against him will deal reduced damage.

Kecleon and Castform start out as Normal types. They're initially weak to Fighting attacks and immune to Ghost moves. Because of their abilities, they may change their types. Kecleon will change to whatever type the move that last hit him was, gaining their resistances and weaknesses. Castform will change depending on the weather (Fire in sunshine, Water in rain, and Ice in hailstorms). You can use this chart of basic Pokémon matchups to determine what move is most effective against them.

Sawsbuck is Normal/Grass. She's weak to Fighting, Flying, Poison, Bug, Fire and Ice attacks but immune to Ghost moves.

Need help? As Bestfriends pointed out to me, everyone in this team has a Power Herb. Expect all moves that normally take two turns to active to only need one turn when first used. A Pokémon with the move Magic Room can help mitigate this nuisance.

Masquerain is Bug/Flying. She's 4x more susceptible to Rock, weak to Flying, Fire, Electric, and Ice, and immune to Ground moves.

Gyarados is Water/Flying. She's 4x more susceptible to Electric attacks, weak to Rock attacks, and immune to Ground moves.

Additional Information

Do I get more money for fighting one team as opposed to another?

No. All gym leaders will give the exact same amount of Poké regardless of which of their teams you defeat. Different gym leaders, however, will give different amounts.

What team should I use against the gym leaders?

@Bestfriends has made a guide on which teams he feels is best suited to battling which gym leaders regardless of their rotation. If you're having difficulty, I recommend you take a look at it.

What's the difference between a Pokémon with ??? for their item or ability as opposed to --- or an actual item or ability?

--- means that the Pokémon doesn't have an item. A Pokémon with ??? for its Ability, item, or move has an unknown Ability, item, or move.

Why do some gym leaders have different coloured names?

Grey means I haven't documented that team yet. Red means I don't have the items recorded. Blue means I have the items recorded. Green means I have the moves and items recorded. Black means I have the moves, items, and abilities recorded.

You've made a mistake. (Pokémon) can't learn (move).

Some Pokémon have moves that they shouldn't be able to learn according to their Gen 7 learnset on Bulbapedia. If I have a move listed it is because I've seen it or Eve has copied it.

You've made a grammatical or spelling error.

Thank you. Please tell me where it is so that I can fix it. I'm the type of person who corrects other people's grammar or spelling so I'd like this guide to be as error free as possible.

Can't you just assume that a Pokémon has the same speed, Ability, or move across different teams for the same leader?

I have observed that different teams from the same leader may have slightly different movesets, items, & abilities even if they have the same Pokémon.

How long did it take to make this guide?

As of May 14th, 2019, the guide is complete. It took 80 days to document all teams.

How much did it cost to make this guide?

0 Poké. If someone fainted, I restarted the battle.

What inspired you to make this?

I like the one I made for Kanto, so I decided to make one for Hoenn as well. I think it would be nice to one day have a team of players pooling their resources together to research things like exact encounter rates, Elite Four teams, and more.

If you have all the tools you need then why post the guide before it's completed?

It's easier to update as I go along than to keep all the information to myself and then post it.

What was the most difficult part of making the guide?

Once you know what to do, it's really simple. The only issue was waiting for the gym cooldowns to complete. The most difficult part of making the guide was finding something to watch while I copied the information over. I settled on whatever anime came out that day. It took me 40 minutes to record the moveset of Rampardos from Roxanne 3. She's powerful enough to knock Eve out with any move, she never seems to miss, and the few times Eve outsped her with Quick Claw, she was fainted immediately afterwards ʘ‿ʘ

I want to help. What can I do?

Take a screenshot of an enemy Pokémon using a specific move or presenting a certain ability and send it to me. I'll add your name as a contributor at the top of the guide.

Will there be a guide for other regions?

I've already made one for Kanto & Sinnoh. @Bestfriends has made a Unova guide and a Morimoto guide.

Will you make an Elite Four rematch guide?

Yes, but due to recent changes it will most likely be discontinued.

         Do you still play PokéMMO?

Yes. My IGN used to be Shadowthiefdark but now it's Redacted.

Your team sucks. My team could easily defeat yours.

Congratulations, (insert name here). You must be the pride and joy of (insert hometown here).

Bestfriends

It was a pleasure helping you get started with the 4th - 8th gyms. I don't have a pokemon that can scout abilities nor a pokemon that can scout items, so I am going to rely on @RedactedColour to do that part. My main function for this guide is to get the movesets and take note of any ability or item that I can see with my own eyes without the need of a Banette nor a Gardevoir.

@RedactedColour , I could read the guide of kanto and now the one of hoenn, I am delighted that it is very good ... I remove the doubts I had in front of some pokemon of gymnastics leaders, even for me, since I always dedicate myself to the rematches of the gym and did not know the other movements of his pokemon.

thanks for the guide

Awesome guide btw. I was wondering If I could credit you and link to it in my NPC guide? I was planning to do something like this (eventually) but since you already have that's much easier haha

Good early morning, I just completed this Norman set thanks to my new Frisk pokemon Gothitelle. Stantler is holding a Focus Sash while Stoutland is holding a Choice Band.

         That's a shame.

Good morning everyone. I hope you're doing well. Due to an important dinner that I have coming up tonight, I figured that I would collect as much information on the gym leaders as I can before I log off. Rarely do I stay up all throughout the night, but this is how dedicated I am towards helping out the community in this regard. Let me discuss the information that was collected:

1. Brawley 5

2. Wattson 5

3. Touched up some informtation on Flannery 1

4. I forgot to stop by Norman, but I was on a bit of a time crunch.

5. Did not document Winona because Winona 1 already has its items, pokemon, and movesets documented. I do not have a pokemon that can Trace abilities.

6. Tate and Liza 2

7. Juan 2

Have a nice day everyone.

Rule #1 when you try to be a nice person, don't remind others you're doing something nice for them.

Good evening, I hope you're doing well. It is time for me to update everyone on my progress of unmasking the Gym Leader sets.

1. Roxanne was already documented in this guide.

2. Brawely was already documented in this guide.

3. Wattson was already documented in this guide.

4. Added details about Flannery 2.

5. Added details about Norman 2.

6. Added details about Winona 2. As a note, Winona 1 and 2 are very similar except for the change from Noctowl to Sigilyph. Both sets are Power Herb sets.

7. Added details about Liza and Tate 3.

8. Juan was already documented in this guide.
