Pokemon Breeding

KilaTheKitty

Question

I heard from another player that breeding kills the parents. I think that's a horrid idea, but I know its for balancing and whatnot. There's a better way to handle that.

Here are some suggestions.

1. Put pokemon on a cooldown after breeding. Id say about a week is good but nothing like a month.

2. Make it so pokemon can only have a certain amount of eggs- but dont *kill them*. Like maybe 5 eggs per pokemon until theyre infertile?

3. Maybe give them clutches? you can keep the pokemon only being able to be bred one time and just give the person like 3-5 eggs. Still, don't kill them please.
4. So like, do anything that doesnt involve getting rid of the pokemon you bred. [Also being able to breed gift pokemon would be nice]

I'm actually a student game designer and digital artist and honestly, killing off the pokemon just seems like bad game design.

The problem with producing 3-5 eggs and not killing the parents is that once you achieve perfection in two pokemon, you make the 3-5 eggs, sell the parents and 1-3 eggs away, and use two of the eggs as new parents, rinse and repeat. What do you get? an overflow of perfect pokemon. This is what happened back in "CloneMMO" days and it was terrible. You can't have a balanced system and not kill the parents, unfortunately.

But, the thing is, is that killing the parents really only upsets the casual player who has no interest in PvP, and you really should only be breeding if you plan to PvP, so...

Also, not being able to breed gift pokemon is kinda the point of gift pokemon.

I think the only possible way to allow players to keep the parents is if you barred the parents from being able to be used in PvP, certain PvE things (like Battle Tower and Holiday events), and prevent them from being traded. But at that point... what's the point?

As someone who has spent a lot of time thinking about the breeding system and analyzing it, I can certainly understand where you are coming from, but I really do think that the current system in place is good for the game.
