How to breed with Hidden Abilities in mind, Matoka's Guide

With the addition of Generation 5 mechanics there will now be Hidden abilities going around for certain Pokemon and new strategies that will be available with their introduction.

*With how Hidden Abilities are currently implied to function I will be explaining based on this current system, I will update if the method is changed however it seems this is the current way we will have to work Hidden Abilities into our Pokemon.

I will be covering how to breed a hidden ability Pokemon you have caught into a Competitive Pokemon, and I will also be explaining how to incorporate a new hidden ability into a competitive pokemon you already possess via breeding for a slight discount over starting from scratch.

[Breeding from Scratch]

The method for this is the exact same as if you were breeding a regular Pokemon, except you must ensure that the female Pokemon in each family branch is the Pokemon with your Hidden Ability where applicable, in cases where the Pokemon is Genderless or Male exclusively then you must ensure that the Genderless / Male pokemon has the Hidden ability and is bred with a Ditto.

[Obtaining a breed-able Hidden Ability Pokemon]

  1. Capture a Magikarp from a Dungeon. If you inspect the Magikarp's ability and see that it is has its hidden ability (in this case: Rattled) then we can be begin.
  2. If your Magikarp is Male you need to breed this Male Magikarp with a ditto in order to pass on the HA to a Female child, breed them then select Female for the offspring.
  3. If the Pokemon you caught with the hidden ability was female to begin with, you may skip the previous step.
  4. You now have a pokemon with its hidden ability we can mould into a competitive pokemon IV and Nature wise.
  • If your pokemon is Genderless or Male only as a species, please see [Pokemon that can only be Genderless / Male]

[Pokemon that can be Female]Spr_5b_129_m.pngThumbnail for version as of 03:21, 8 September 2016Spr 5b 004.pngSpr 5b 258.pngSpr 5b 133.pngThumbnail for version as of 03:30, 7 October 2016Spr 5b 115.pngSpr 5b 124.png

I will now explain how you would breed a 5x31 Gyarados with desirable nature from your Hidden Ability Magikarp.

  1. Take your 0x31 Hidden Ability Magikarp (female) and breed it with a male pokemon with your desired nature, have the male pokemon hold an everstone. Select Female child.
You now have a 0x31 Natured Hidden Ability Magikarp (Female) Egg
  2. Give your female Magikarp an Everstone and breed it with a male 1x31 IV pokemon holding the appropriate breeding brace, select Female for the offspring
You now have a 1x31 Natured Hidden Ability Magikarp (Female) Egg
  3. Give your female Magikarp an Everstone and breed it with a male 2x31 IV with one of the 31's being the same as the Female's, give the appropriate brace for whatever the other stat is and select Female for the offspring
You now have a 2x31 Natured Hidden Ability Magikarp (Female) Egg
  4. Give your female Magikarp an Everstone and breed it with a male 3x31 IV with two of the 31's being the same as the Female's, give the appropriate brace for whatever the other stat is and select Female for the offspring
You now have a 3x31 Natured Hidden Ability Magikarp (Female) Egg
  5. Give your female Magikarp an Everstone and breed it with a male 4x31 IV with three of the 31's being the same as the Female's, give the appropriate brace for whatever the other stat is and select Female for the offspring
You now have a 4x31 Natured Hidden Ability Magikarp (Female) Egg
  6. Give your female Magikarp an Everstone and breed it with a male 5x31 IV with four of the 31's being the same as the Female's, give the appropriate brace for whatever the other stat is.
You now have a 5x31 Natured Hidden Ability Magikarp (Your choice on gender) Egg
  7. You now have your 5x31 Natured Hidden Ability Magikarp and have achieved your goal! It can now become your competitive Gyarados with Moxie as its ability if you so desire!

Below I will explain the process for if your pokemon is Gendelress or Male only as a species, I will be using Porygon for this example.

*Warning, Genderless / Male only pokemon are extremely expensive to breed if you go for perfect 31 IV pokemon due to their reliance on extremely rare wild Dittos with high IV's.

  1. Take your 0x31 Hidden Ability Porygon and breed it with a Ditto with yoru desired nature, have the Ditto hold an everstone.
You now have a 0x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon Egg
  2. Give your 0x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon an Everstone and breed it with a 1x31 Ditto holding the appropriate brace for that stat.
You now have a 1x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon Egg
  3. Give your 1x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon an Everstone and breed it with a 2x31 Ditto that has one of the 31's the same as Porygon's, and give the Ditto a bracer for whatever the stat that doesn't overlap is.
You now have a 2x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon Egg
  4. Give your 2x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon an Everstone and breed it with a 3x31 Ditto that has two of the 31's the same as Porygon's, and give the Ditto a bracer for whatever the stat that doesn't overlap is.
You now have a 3x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon Egg
  5. Give your 3x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon an Everstone and breed it with a 4x31 Ditto that has three of the 31's the same as Porygon's, and give the Ditto a bracer for whatever the stat that doesn't overlap is.
You now have a 4x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon Egg
  6. Give your 4x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon an Everstone and breed it with a 5x31 Ditto that has four of the 31's the same as Porygon's, and give the Ditto a bracer for whatever the stat that doesn't overlap is.
You now have a 5x31 Natured Hidden Ability Porygon Egg
  7. You have reached your desired Goal! Now you have a competitive Analytic Porygon.

TL;DR The Mother (or Non-Ditto) parent will pass on their hidden ability to the child. The Father cannot pass on a hidden ability unless it is bred with a ditto or with a female of the exact same species.

Currently available Pokemon families that have access to their Hidden Abilities:
None. No dungeons have been introduced yet. Come back later for updates.

Pretty sure the best way is to:

make a 6x31 unnatured HA pokemon that is female first. Then make a 5x31 unnatured male (HA not needed). then 4x31 unnatured male, 3x31 unnatured male, 2x31 unnatured male, 1x31 unnatured male. Then breed a natured pokemon with each of the unnatured males in order (selecting female for the offspring each time until the last). Make the 5x31 natured offspring male. Then breed that with the 6x31 unnatured HA pokemon that's female.

This way if you get lucky with nature rolls, you take full advantage.

edit:

it's literally the same as normal breeding, just making sure that the HA pokemon is always female.

I know, but people might be curious about it, and having a step-by-step guide isn't going to hurt anyone, and some people might not understand how it works since its new to some people.

You are right though it could be optimal to do 5x31 Unnatured HA poke first, but I tend to prefer doing it first for some reason so that's why I put it like that I guess.

Didn't intend to list EVERY genderless / male only pokemon, also Spiritomb isn't genderless?
And Mandibuzz can just be done normally, same a Chansey / Kangaskhan / Jynx which are also all female only.

Also Ty for heads up Djinn

I'll be working on the rest of this guide in a bit, got busy today and just popped on to see whats happening but now im heading to bed. will aim to finish it tomorrow

This should probably wait until we actually have hidden abilities and have more official concrete information about how it will work.  With it not being implemented and not guaranteed to work any one specific way as of yet, it could very well lead to confusion in multiple ways.  Some before the update when people see this and start asking where dungeons are, and some after we actually get the update if anything here ends up being incorrect.
