[Forum event] Orange's Teambuilding Challenge - Part 2 - Don't judge a book...

Recommended Posts

... by its cover. Old and maybe a bit corny saying but hey, it's true. This definitely applies in Pokemon as well in terms of Pokemon's base stats. The first thing that people most commonly notice about a Pokemon is Pokemon's base stats. It often determines whether this Pokemon deserves a second look or not. For the most part, stats are important. Well, the most important single factor of any Pokemon. It doesn't matter what type advantages you have, what moves you have if a 600 BST Dragonite faces a baby Pokemon. You don't bring a sword to a gunfight.... or Azurill to Elite Four. Unless you have tons of X items and Full Restores but let's not get derailed here.

Base stats often determine the very nature and role of a Pokemon as well. It doesn't matter how wide is your coverage if your damage output is equivalent to a baby. Or it doesn't matter if you learned all the support moves in the world if you get knocked out cold by a mild breeze.

The theme in part 2 is to come up with the most unique, creative and effective Pokemon build despite the Pokemon's low stats in your seemingly needed area. You have two options:

  • Make any viable build for a Pokemon that has abysmal stats all across the board
  • Make a viable offensively oriented build for a Pokemon with more defensive stats or a defensively oriented build for a Pokemon with more offensive stats

You can choose this build to be from any PokeMMO's tier (OU, UU, NU, Doubles, LC). Ubers is allowed too because why not.

Important: Because too many people already misinterpreted this in the first part, I'll emphasize it here again: The winner won't necessarily be the most effective build but the one that is deemed the most unique, most creative, most interesting but at the same time still serving an actual purpose in its metagame. Explaining what Pokemon does this build support and why should it be used are very needed parts of your entry.

Write-ups that will guaranteed to not win due to being too popular or too easy to be considered a creative entry:

Spoiler

- Defensive Arcanine

- Defensive Gyarados
- Defensive Vaporeon

- Defensive Gardevoir

- Wish Raichu

- Utility Crobat

- Defensive Nidoqueen

- Shedinja

- Any Pokemon with ability Huge Power or Pure Power

I guess that's all, good luck!

Deadline: 29th August at 5 PM EST.

Oh right, the prize. The prize for this one will be 5 of every shard. Further donations are welcome.

On phone so can't make it look dope.

Rash Muk for NU.

Moveset: Sludgebomb-GigaDrain-Fireblast-Focuspunch.

Item: Lifeorb

-2hkos Bellossom

-1hko Victreebel

-1hko Kecleon

-2hko Solrock

-1hko Whiscash

-1hko Kabutop

-1hko Venomoth

-2hko Roselia

-2hko Walrein ( fp + giga drain )

Paired with Murkrow to trap Chimecho, this set can be threatening if used with a good prediction.

Although Shuckle can stop it easily.

Its maybe not the most creative one but Water Spout Blastoise is a very solid pokemon for UU or NU (if it ever becomes NU again). It has pretty good speed which makes blastoise very good. Hiddenpower grass allows you to hit pokemons like Quagsire, Kabutops, Whiscash.

Nature: Timid
Item: Choice Specs

Moves: Surf / Water Spout / Ice Beam / Hiddenpower Grass

Welp. I honestly see no reason why you couldn't make another Smeargle post, since I didn't blacklist it. Would be preferred that you would fit the post more to reflect this theme but I really can't deny you from making another Smeargle entry.

This entry will be for Clamperl for NU.

Spoiler

Clamperl @ Deep Sea Tooth
Ability: Shell Armor
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power Electric/Grass
- Toxic/Substitute/Protect/Confuse Ray

While its Sp.Atk stat may seem weak at only 137, a Deep Sea Tooth will double it, giving Clamperl 274 Sp.Atk, which surpasses even Deoxys-A! The speed EVs allow Clamperl to outspeed some slower walls, which would otherwise just recover in its face. Clamperl loves Paralysis support, as it allows a chance to take out faster walls (65+ base Speed,) and faster attackers. The moveset provided gives amazing coverage in NU and can take care of most threats. HP Electric is preferred over Grass in order to beat Mantine, but the latter takes care of Whiscash more reliably. For the last moveslot, a number of moves can be used. Toxic cripples switch-ins like Kecleon, Bellossom, Grumpig, and Electric types, which can punish Clamperl if she dares stay in. Substitute guards you from status moves of the enemy, and can give a free attack against common walls. Protect acts similar to Substitute, but can also ease prediction from choice attackers. Confuse Ray is not as reliable as Toxic, but may save you in a pinch.

Calcs:

Spoiler
252+ SpA Deep Sea Tooth Clamperl Surf vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Kecleon: 78-93 (46.7 - 55.6%) -- 18% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Deep Sea Tooth Clamperl Hidden Power Electric vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Kecleon (Water): 78-92 (46.7 - 55%) -- 9.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Deep Sea Tooth Clamperl Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Bellossom: 118-140 (64.8 - 76.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Deep Sea Tooth Clamperl Surf vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Chimecho: 94-112 (51.6 - 61.5%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Deep Sea Tooth Clamperl Hidden Power Electric vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Mantine: 136-164 (70.8 - 85.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Deep Sea Tooth Clamperl Surf vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Granbull: 184-217 (93.4 - 110.1%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Deep Sea Tooth Clamperl Surf vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Raichu: 102-120 (61 - 71.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Checks/Counters:

Kecleon and Grumpig can withstand surfs and spread status of their own, but hate Toxic. Careful Muk is immune to Toxic and is 3HKO'd by surf. Mantine walls sets that lack HP Electric. Clamperl will hate poison and paralysis, so avoid these as much as possible. Keep clear of Knock Off and Trick as well, as Clamperl becomes quite weak without Deep Sea Tooth.

Plusle and Minun for doubles, got that plus and minus ability to give each other some extra bang for your buck. But I know what you're thinking, but Havsha, is that really enough?? Well, listen here, both of these pokemon learn helping hand, giving you extra spark for your bite.So the top recommendations for its move set is probably thunderbolt,hp ice/grass(having both between the two for that extra diversity), helping hand and either encore or protect, it is doubles after all. Honestly, a Plusle can start pulling its own weight with these conditions, not only because it weights a mere 4.2kg, but with a bast spatk of 85 and a base speed of 95, the boost makes it more than capable with handling your common doubles pest. Still not convinced?  Well lets take a look at the calcs:

+1 should be equivalent of the plus and ability combo:

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Plusle Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 284-336 (167 - 197.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Plusle Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Tyranitar: 118-139 (67.4 - 79.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Plusle Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Gengar: 151-178 (111.8 - 131.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Plusle Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hitmontop: 109-130 (69.4 - 82.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

+1 252 SpA Life Orb Plusle Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 472-564 (277.6 - 331.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Disclaimer, I do not play doubles, I do not know what spreads are used, I do not know the meta, T&Cs may apply

I may or may not have a plusle and minun for sale, irrelevant I swear

Aron lvl 1 with Shell Bell as an object and Protect, Endeavor and Sandstorm/Toxic as moves is op despite having abysmal stats. Aron doesn't need EV investment or good IVs. The only thing Aron needs is a trashboi as an opponent, so that the sweep can come true.

Thanks to Shell Bell and having only 12 HP, Aron can get back to full life after using Endeavor against nearly any healthy lvl 50 pokemon which also mean getting back sturdy while bringing the opponent to very low HP. Aron can't really switch on anything because it would risk losing sturdy and that would make it useless. For that reason, playing it as a lead is ideal.

It does decently well in tiers where ghosts are rare like NU and OU since that means there are no free switch against endeavor for the opponent. Pairing Aron with a decent Pursuit user helps a lot against ghosts.

Aron also does pretty good against offense in general because it is a huge momentum killer.

Since Endeavor is not a fatal move, Aron needs Toxic or Sandstorm to hit the opponent's mon after it has been brought down to low hp. Protect can capitalise safely on the dmg from Toxic and/or Sandstorm.

All steel types are unaffected by Toxic and Sandstorm, so Aron is left harmless against them. Pokemons immune to Toxic that hold a leftovers and have less than 176 HP can also not die against Aron. For that reason, Roar should be considered as a potential move on aron since it would prevent certain mons from setting up on it.

Aron is super vulnerable against multistrike moves, sleeping moves and Fake Out. Therefore, Aron needs to be supported with a team that can handle the mons using these moves commonly and, since those mons vary from tier to tier, the counters needed will also vary from tier to tier.

It isn't banned for PSL or for Silph Co tournaments. The main reason why it is banned in matchmaking and automated tournaments is because they don't want noobs using their low level mons there.

Nah was just jokes. Here's my entry:

Diglett Diglett sprite from Black 2 & White 2 & Black & White

10 / 55 / 25 / 35 / 45 / 90

Reversal Trapper

Item - Liechi Berry

Nature - Adamant / Jolly

EVs - 252 Attack / 252 Speed

Moves - Earthquake / Substitute / Screech / Reversal

Explanation - Dugtrio may be in Uber territory, but its child is still a free mon in lower tiers, just fucking around with players who rely on common special walls to not lose a match (Kangaskhan, Raichu (Tho the usage of SP Def version really dropped a lot in last months), Camerupt (Same as Raichu), Kecleon, Muk, etc.)

55 Attack base may seem weak at first, but considering it has access to a STAB 100 power move in Earthquake which is common weakness in lots of special walls, along with 200 power fighting move in Reversal which covers the stuff Earthquake can't get rid of (and vice-versa) then you have a pretty gay mon to deal with.

It can even trap Shuckle on a double switch, Shuckle only breaks Substitute after 4-5 Knock Offs which allows Diglett to Substitute, Screech, EQ/Reversal before Shuckle uses Encore after each 3 turns. (Bet Daryl will start breeding a Diglett after he sees this)

Calcs

Spoiler

+1 252 Atk Diglett Reversal (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Kangaskhan: 238-282 (112.2 - 133%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 Atk Diglett Reversal (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Walrein: 220-260 (101.3 - 119.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252 Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Camerupt: 200-236 (112.9 - 133.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+1 252+ Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Muk: 206-246 (97.1 - 116%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO

Scarf / Banded Revenge Killer

Item - Choice Scarf / Choice Band

Nature - Adamant / Jolly

EVs - 252 Attack / 252 Speed

Moves - Earthquake / Rock Slide / Memento / Aerial Ace

Explanation - Works for pretty much any tier since it can trap lots of offensive threats and even some walls and OHKO them. Scarf is usually used over Band on this set, Memento is so that incase you don't get to trap+Ohko anything in the match, it can still serve as utility move to setup something like a Belly Drum sweep after that.

Calcs

Spoiler

252+ Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Jolteon: 168-198 (120 - 141.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Diglett Aerial Ace vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Heracross: 112-136 (71.7 - 87.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Diglett Aerial Ace vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Breloom: 108-128 (79.4 - 94.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Nidoking: 138-164 (87.8 - 104.4%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Tentacruel: 152-182 (81.2 - 97.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Houndoom: 210-248 (140 - 165.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Blaziken: 164-194 (105.8 - 125.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Electabuzz: 170-204 (122.3 - 146.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Got Shed Hull?- a'ka Scizor Eliminator

Modest (choice scarf) or Timid (Life Orb/ Specs)

248 satk, 248 speed, the rest 12 EVs into any of possible defensive IVs, depending on actual IVs

Magnet pull

Thunderbolt

Hidden power Fire

Signal Beam

Toxic

Explanation:

Spoiler

At first, Magnemite used to be quite a one-dimensional pokemon. Get yourself a Sneasel, a Curse-Rest Cradily, pair it with Magnemite to trap Scizor which walls both of them. Kill Scizor and you're free to go!

Later on I realised, this thing can switch on Sneasel's low kick or Bite and threaten it out. It is also possible to switch it into a Cradily and either tox or signal beam for direct damage. If necessary, it can also trap and damage Steelix with HP Fire. It's a niche poke but it has worked for me multiple times.

This entry will be Graveler in NU

Spoiler

13dc182a5f7ca231ed201013fba2994f.png

Graveler on paper is seemingly an absolutely terrible pick for any tier, even NU. It has an appalling 390 base stat total. 390 is in the same tier as Weepinbell and Ledian, which are two garbage mons. This being said, Graveler has a niche in NU as it shares the ability of its infamous brother Golem. This ability is sturdy, which allows it to survive an 1hko for any mon. This allows Graveler to take one hit from anything, and hit back with hard hitting Rock and Ground stabs, and other coverage like superpower, explosion, or even get off a last minute rapid spin. Not only is sturdy helping it survive hits, but it can wall normal and flying moves from the likes of Fearow, Stantler, Granbull, Scyther, Murkrow and Niinjask. It can take poison and bug type moves from the likes of Muk, Masquerain. It can switch in on fat mons like Shuckle, Kecleon, and Macargo which allows it to fire off an extremely hard hitting QuakeSlide combo. Graveler is also immune to electric type attacks, allowing it to switch into the likes of Raichu, and Electabuzz. Although you better be hopeful they are choiced, or you have sturdy available. You are not taking surf or hp grass, hell even hp ice probably kills you.

Now don't get me wrong, Graveler is a super niche pick. But the unique thing about Graveler, is no other Pokemon in NU can be used as a sturdy-user and wallbreaker at the same. It can function as a very potent lead, and a powerful offensive pivot into common normal and flying type moves. Graveler finally has the time to shine with Aggron and Golem leaving the tier, allowing it to have its niche. Don't sleep on 95 base attack backed up with a choice band and 2 powerful stabs. Not to mention a respectable 55/115 defense spread allowing it to take a few resisted hits.

Set:

Spoiler

Graveler - Lead set

Choice band - 124 hp evs / 252 attack evs/ 132 speed evs

Sturdy - Adamant Nature

Earthquake

Rock blast/Rock slide

Superpower/ Explosion

Explosion/Rapid spin/Toxic

This set is the bread and butter Graveler. It is meant for the lead spot, allowing it to live any hit and 1hko back common leads like Raichu, Walrein, Qwilfish, Roselia, Stantler,Granbull and Fearow.Rock blast  will hit nearly anything in the tier for neutral or super effective damage, and earthquake picks up the rest. Superpower can be used for certain mons that you need the 1hko on, and explosion can be used if you need a panic option to hit everything hard. Rapid spin can be used in order to help against spikes, although the lead spot will take care of the early spikes. Toxic is for the two mons that can wall Graveler, being Bellossom and Tangela.

132 speed evs allow you to outspeed non-invested Granbull, Metang, Bellossom, Camerupt, Sableye, and Torkoal. You can add speed to creep on things like Granbull. 252 attack evs are to maximize the damage output on your choice banded hits. 124 hp evs to round out the ev spread and help against resisted hits.

I'd assume explosion and the 25% of rock blast hitting harder than rock slide is the only reason to run graveler over lairon. Otherwise lairon seems to be better as it 4x resists flying/normal while also being a psychic check. Also has pretty similar base stats, but higher base def/hp/sp def/speed at the cost of -5 attack. Cb eq isn't that great, although I guess it would come in handy vs qwilfish (but lairon also lives 2 waterfalls from qwilfish since its only 2x weak to water
