Gym Battle Cool down

I can't find anything on the forum for a cool down after you battle the gym leader. I battled the petalburg city gym leader with my Pokemon at low hp and I lost. I figured I would just get the max heal and battle him again but now it says the door is locked. How long do I have to wait before I am able to challenge him again?

Assuming you're doing rematches (postgame after having cleared them once), 20 hours.

I'm curious what door you are saying is locked, it should be possible to walk up to the gym leaders at all times. Is it possible you've taken an alternative route through the gym, past an NPC you've yet to defeat?

 

Gym leaders in Hoenn have a 20hr cooldown on rematches after the elite 4, but during the initial story can be battled at any time

I got on in the morning and it was just back to normal, I don't know why it said it was locked then since it was during the initial story.
