Mnemosyne’s Never Used competitive guide

Welcome everyone, In the last couple of months I noticed that the popularity of the NU tier has grown alot, because of this I decided to make a Never Used Competitive Guide. I will try to keep this guide updated with the monthly tier changes due to usage and adjust sets if needed. If anyone has feedback about sets, or has new sets to add, that they would like to share, feel free to reply =).

The following pokemons are Never Used pokemons:

Aggron
Bellosom
Camerupt

Cacturne
Claydol
Chimecho

Diglett
Electabuzz
Electrode

Exploud
Fearow
Flareon
Gligar
Golduck
Gorebyss
Hitmontop
Kabutops
Kadabra
Kecleon
Kingler
Magmar
Mantine

Masquerain

Scyther
Shiftry
Shuckle
Solrock
Stantler
Tangela
Tropius
Torkoal
Victreebell
Venomoth
Walrein
Whiscash

Xatu

Aggron
HP 70 / Atk 110 / Def 180 / Sp Atk 60 / Sp Def 60 / Speed 50
With it’s amazing rock + steel typing, 110 attack stat and sturdy ability, Aggron is one of the most dangerous wallbreakers in the current NU tier, that gives your opponent a lot of pressure. It is a lot of predicting, and it’s best stab move only has 75% accuracy but there are barely pokemons that don’t get 2HKO’d by this monster. Watch out for water and ground moves.

Choice Bander
Item: Choice Band
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Sturdy
EV’s: 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Iron Tail - Rock Slide - Earthquake - Thunderpunch

Best counters: Tangela and Whiscash

Bellosom
HP 75 / Atk 80 / Def 95 / Sp Atk 90 / Sp Def 100 / Speed 50
Bellosom is a good defensive wall that has access to synthesis and leech seed for recovery. Being a grass type gives a good answer to water and ground moves. Bellosom is one of the few pokemons that stop Kingler and Whiscash and checks offensive Raichu. Watch out for Victreebells and Roselia that could easily switch in.

Defensive wall
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Bold
Ability: Chlorophyll
EV’s: 252 HP / 252 Def
Moveset: Giga Drain – Sludge Bomb/HP Ice – Synthesis – Leech Seed/Toxic

Cacturne

Camerupt
HP 70 / Atk 100 / Def 70 / Sp Atk 100 / Sp Def 75 / Speed 40
Camerupt has pretty poor defensive statt’s but it’s electric immunity, 4 resists and having only 2 weaknesses makes it a decent special defensive wall that can counter Electabuzz and switch in on grass types like Bellosom andTangela. Eruption is it’s strongest stab move that could be used on a offensive set to break walls. Camerupt benefits a lot from a spikes user. Earthquake is mainly for hitting other Camerupts.

Special Defensive wall
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Sassy
EV’s: 252 Hp / 252 Sp Def
Moveset: Flamethrower - Earthquake – Toxic – Roar

Eruption
Item: Special Choice band / Swift Choice Band
Nature: Mild
Ev’s: 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Eruption – Flamethrower – HP Grass – Earthquake

Claydol
HP 60 / Atk 70 / 105 Def / 70 Sp Atk / 120 Sp Def / 75 Speed
Claydol is one of the few spinners in the current NU tier. It has impressive defensive stats but pretty poor offensive stats. Has 6 amazing resistances but also 6 weaknesses. Only use it as a spinner. You could also go for the special defensive set as a Raichu + Electabuzz counter if you want to.

Defensive Rapid Spinner
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Relaxed/Bold
Ability: Levitate
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Def
Moveset: Earthquake/Ice Beam – Psychic – Rapid Spin – Toxic/Rest

Special Defensive Rapid Spinner
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Sassy
Ability: Levitate
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Sp Def
Moveset: Earthquake – Psychic – Rapid Spin – Toxic/Rest

Chimecho
HP 75 / Atk 50 / 80 Def / 95 Sp Atk / 90 Sp Def / 65 Speed
This year Chimecho got a very nice buff in HP, Def and Sp Def which have made Chimecho a decent support pokemon. It has an amazing movepool with moves like: Wish, Heal Bell, Recover, Thunder Wave to support your team. If you go recover in stead of wish, I suggest you to pick Calm Mind fort he second slot.

Support
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Bold
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Def
Moveset: Wish/Recover – Protect/Calm Mind – Heal Bell – Psychic

Diglett

Electabuzz
HP 65 / Atk 83 / Def 57 / Sp Atk 95 / Sp Def 85 / Speed 105
Electabuzz has one of the highest speed stats in this NU tier. It’s very good stats and amazing movepool makes Electabuzz currently one of the best offensive sweepers.

Special sweeper
Item: Life Ball
Nature: Timid
Ev’s: 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Thunderbolt – HP Ice/Grass – Psychic – Signal beam

Mixed offensive
Item: Life Ball
Ev’s 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Cross Chop – HP Ice – Psychic – Thunderbolt

Best counters:
Kecleon (If not Cross Chop)
Whiscash (If not HP Grass)
Claydol
Bellosom
Raichu (If not Cross Chop)
Muk

Electrode
HP 60 / Atk 50 / Def 70 / Sp Atk 80 / Sp Def 80 / Speed 150
Electrode is the fastest pokemon in the game. The best way to use Electrode is to try and get behind a substitute, then toxic while behind the sub. Even though it’s offensive stat isn’t the best it can still give the opponent a lot of pressure. 108 Speed EV’s gives you 184 speed at level 50.

Sub + Toxic
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Modest
Ev’s: 144 HP / 252 Sp Atk / 108 Speed
Moveset: Thunderbolt – HP Ice – Toxic – Substitute

Best counters:
Muk
Metang
Kecleon
Raichu

Exploud

Fearow
HP 65 / Atk 90 / Def 65 / Sp Atk 61 / Sp Def 61 / Speed 100
Fearow is the fastest normal spammer in this Never Used tier. It’s movepool is pretty horrific but it can do the job for you. It has access to a priority stabmove and can pursuit.

Choice Bander
Item: Choice Band
Nature: Jolly
Ev’s 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Return/Double Edge – Drill Peck – Quick attack – Pursuit

Best counters:
Solrock
Metang
Aggron
Shuckle

Flareon
HP 65 / Atk 130 / Def 60 / Sp Atk 95 / Sp Def 110 / Speed 65
Flareon can either be used as a mixed wallbreaker or special defensive support set. Flareon isn’t used that much currently, but it is a good pokemon that should defenitely be used more often. The 220 speed ev’s on the wallbreaker set lets Flareon outspeed max speed Whiscash.

Mixed wallbreaker
Item: Life Ball/Choice Band

Nature: Lonely
Ev’s: 38 HP / 252 Atk / 220 Speed
Moveset: Superpower / Overheat / Quick Attack/HP Grass / Bite/HP Grass

Wish Support
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Calm
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Sp Def
Moveset: Flamethrower – Toxic – Protect – Wish

Best counters:
Chimecho
Solrock
Qwilfish
Shuckle

Gligar
HP 65 / Atk 75 / Def 105 / Sp Atk 35 / Sp Def 65 / Speed 85
Gligar it’s typing makes it immune to Thunderbolt and Earthquake and also resistances to Fighting, Bug and Poison moves. Gligar is as it’s best as a offensive swords dancer or defensive wall. Watch out for ice or water moves. HP Ice is a move that is used a lot on Electabuzz, Electrode and offensive Raichu these days.

Offensive Swords Dance:
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Jolly
Ability: Hyper Cutter
Ev’s: 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Earthquake – Aerial Ace – Quick Attack – Swords Dance

Defensive Wall:
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Impish
Ability: Hyper Cutter
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Def
Moveset: Earthquake – Aerial Ace – Toxic – Counter

Golduck
HP 80 / Atk 82 / Def 78 / Sp Atk 95 / Sp Def 80 / Speed 85
Golduck has very all-rounded stats and one of the few water pokemons that has access to Psychic. Golduck is a decent offensive calm minder. It’s ability Cloud Nine blocks the effects of weather. Although there are better calm minders in this meta like Xatu. Gets pretty easily walled by Kecleon and Raichu.

Offensive Calm Minder
Item: Life Ball / Leftovers
Nature: Timid
Ability: Cloud Nine
Ev’s: 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Surf – Ice Beam – Psychic – Calm Mind

Best counters:
Raichu
Kecleon

Gorebyss
HP 54 / Atk 84 / Def 105 / Sp Atk 114 / Sp Def 75 / Speed 52
The ability Swift Swim makes Gorebyss the best special attacking rain user. Rain Dance boosts your speed and powers up Surf, turning Gorebyss into an offensive powerhouse.

Rain Dance Sweeper
Item: Life Ball
Nature: Modest
Ability: Swift Swim
Ev’s: 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Surf – Ice Beam – HP Grass /HP Electric– Rain Dance

Best counters:
Raichu
Muk

Hitmontop
HP 50 / Atk 95 / Def 95 / Sp Atk 35 / Sp Def 110 / Speed 70
Even though Hitmontop it’s HP is pretty low, the ability Intimidate and it’s 95 defensive and 110 special defensive makes Hitmontop a very good wall. Having Rapid spin only makes it even better.

Rapid Spinner
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Impish
Ev’s: 252 HP, 252 Def
Moveset: Mach Punch/High Jump Kick – Earthquake/Rock Slide – Rock Slide/Toxic – Rapid Spin

Bulk Up
Item: Leftovers/Chesto Berry
Nature: Careful
Ev’s: 252 HP, 252 Sp Def
Moveset: High Jump Kick – Earthquake/Rock Slide – Bulk Up – Rest/Rock Slide/Earthquake

Kabutops
HP 60 / Atk 115 / Def 105 / Sp Atk 65 / Sp Def 70 / Speed 80
Kabutops can either be used as a rain dance sweeper or choice scarfer. It’s water + rock typing gives it 2 very solid stab moves. The rock typing allows Kabutops to stop normal spam. 118 speed is needed to outspeed everything as a rain dance user. If you already got a rain dancer, defenitely use aerial ace.

Rain Dance sweeper
Item: Life Ball
Nature: Adamant
Ev’s: 116 HP / 252 Atk / 142 Speed
Moveset: Rain Dance/Aerial Ace – Waterfall – Rock Slide – Superpower

Choice Scarf
Item: Choice Scarf
Nature: Jolly
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Speed
Moveset: Rock Slide – Waterfall – Superpower – Aerial Ace

Best counters:
Bellosom
Tangela
Hitmontop
Qwilfish

Kadabra
HP 40 / Atk 35 / Def 30 / Sp Atk 120 / Sp Def 70 / Speed 105
This thing is a very dangerous sweeper in Never Used. Psychic + Signal Beam is a very strong offensive combination. It can either be used as a calm minder or as a special bander. Just make sure you switch this thing in safely. Also watch out for special defensive Metang that could pursuit trap you.

Calm Minder
Item: Life Ball
Nature: Timid
Ev’s: 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Psychic – Signal beam/Shadow Ball – HP Fighting/HP Ground – Calm Mind

Special Choice band
Item: Special Choice Band
Nature: Timid
Ev’s: 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Psychic – Signal beam/Shadow Ball – HP Fighting/HP Ground – Trick

Best counters:
Metang
Raichu
Kecleon

Kecleon
HP 60 / Atk 90 / Def 70 / Sp Atk 60 / Sp Def 120 / Speed 40
Having the ability Color Change and an amazing 120 Special Defense stat makes Kecleon one of the best special defensive walls in the game, if not the best. What color change does is it changes the type to the type of the last attack that hit this pokemon. Also has Recover and Thunder Wave. Thunder wave helps crippling fast opposing attackers or slow defensive calm minders like Chimecho and Xatu.

Specially Defensive:
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Careful
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 SP Def
Moveset: Seismic Toss – Thief – Recover – Thunder Wave/Toxic

Kingler
HP 55 / Atk 130 / Def 115 / Sp Atk 50 / Sp Def 50 / Speed 75
Another amazing wallbreaker in the tier. Can either be used as a Choice Bander, Swords Dancer or Choice Scarfer. Crabhammer is defenitely something to watch out for. The best counters for this gigantic krab are Tangela and Bellosom. For the Choice Banded and Scarf set I would just pick Swords dance in the last slot because it only has 3 proper moves to use anyway.

Choice Band
Item: Choice Band
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
Ev’s: 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Crabhammer – Return – Superpower – Swords Dance (Could use Rock Tomb, but meh)

Swords Dance
Item: Life Ball
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
Ev’s: 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Crabhammer – Superpower – Return – Swords Dance

Flail + Swords Dance
Item: Salac Berry
Nature: Jolly
Ev’s: 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Crabhammer – Flail – Substitute – Swords Dance

Choice Scarf
Item: Choice Scarf
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
Ev’s: 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Crabhammer – Return – Superpower – Swords Dance (Could use Rock Tomb, but meh)

Best counters:
Tangela
Bellosom

Magmar
HP 65 / Atk 95 / Def 57 / Sp Atk 100 / Sp Def 85 / Speed 93
Magmar is a very solid offensive pokemon that should be used as a mixed offensive or belly drummer. On the mixed offensive set I would advise using HP Grass for Whiscash or HP Ice for Gligar.

Mixed Offensive
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Hasty/Mild
Ev’s: 252 SP Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Flamethrower/Fire Blast – Cross Chop/Focus Punch – Thunderpunch – HP Grass/Ice

Belly Drummer
Item: Salac Berry
Ev’s: 252 Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Belly Drum – Fire Punch – Thunderpunch – Mach Punch

Beste counters:
Torkoal
Solrock

Mantine
HP 85 / Atk 40 / Def 70 / Sp Atk 80 / Sp Def 140 / Speed 70
With a blazing 140 stat in Special Defense Mantine can take special attacks, not named Thunderbolt pretty easy. Unfortunately in the current NU tier Electric pokemons like Electabuzz and Raichu are pretty common so make sure you got something for these two pokemons when using Mantine. Mantine it’s Special Defense is already so high that it doesn’t really need more investment. Also Mantine has a pretty bad movepool.

Physically Defensive
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Bold
Ability: Water Absorb
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Def
Moveset: Surf – Air Cutter/HP Fly – Toxic/Sleep Talk/Haze – Rest

Masquerain
HP 70 / Atk 60 / Def 62 / Sp Atk 100 / Sp Def 82 / Speed 80
Masquerain got a buf this year in Pokemon where it’s Sp Atk and Speed got a pretty decent raise, which made it viable to use in the NU Tier.  Unfortunately it only has 80 base speed, so it gets revenge killed pretty easily by other offensive pokemons unless Choice Scarf. Although 100 Sp Atk is not something to laugh about. It’s offensive movepool though is good. I would recommend using either Choice Specs or Life Ball.

Offensive sweeper (Special thanks to @xStarr)
Item: Choice Specs/Life Ball
Nature: Timid
Ev’s: 252 Sp Atk / 252 Speed
Moveset: Air Cutter/HP Fly – Signal Beam – Ice Beam – Hydro Pump/Giga Drain
Best counters:
Raichu
Kecleon
Muk

Mawile
HP 50 / Atk 85 / Def 85 / Sp Atk 55 / Sp Def 55 / Speed 50
When you see the base stats you probably thinking it’s really bad, having 4 stats < 60. But fortunately it’s amazing defensive typing, ability and good movepool really makes up for that. Mawile has 12 resistances and is only weak to three typing. It’s immune to toxic (a very common move) and stops normal spam from Fearow and Stantler. It is also one of the few hard counters for mixed swords dance Victreebell.

Defensive Support
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Impish
Ability: Intimidate
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Def
Moveset: Seismic Toss – Super Fang – Knock Off – Toxic

Metang
HP 60 / Atk 75 / Def 100 / Sp Atk 55 / Sp Def 80 / Speed 50
The good thing about Metang is the 4x resistance to Psychic. It has his niche to counter Kadabra and pursuit trap it, but also being able to check Venomoth. It’s typing and defensive stats are excellent for a wall. Trick can be used to swift choice band walls like Whiscash, Torkoal or Solrock that could come in and get leftovers.

Special Defensive wall

Item: Leftovers/Swift Choice Band
Nature: Sassy
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Sp Def
Moveset: Meteor Mash – Psychic – Toxic/Trick – Pursuit

Muk
HP 105 / Atk 105 / Def 75 / Sp Atk 65 / Sp Def 100 / Speed 50
When you these stats you probably thinking, why is this even NU? Well pretty simple because it doesn’t have a proper physical stab move. Sticky Hold is a very good ability to have because it can’t lose its item by Knock Off. Unfortunately for Muk is that Ground and Psychic moves are pretty common in this tier. The best way to go is using a Curse set or Subpunch set.

Curse
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Careful
Ability: Sticky Hold
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Sp Def
Moveset: Curse – Rest – Ice Punch – Thunderpunch/Body Slam

Subpuncher (Special thanks to @DiDi)
Item: Leftovers
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Sticky Hold
Ev’s: 252 HP / 252 Atk
Moveset: Substitute – Toxic/Thunderpunch – Focus Punch – Ice Punch/Thunder Punch

should add diglett to the list. beats two of the most common sp def walls in the meta and can run either scarf or sub/screech.

I could ask Diglett to the list, although I don't really know what the used sets for it is. Same goes for Cacturne.

Pinsir
HP 64 / Atk 125 / Def 100 / Sp Atk 55 / Sp Def 70 / Speed 85
Currently lacking a reliable STAB, the horned-wonder can still get by with its incredibly high attack stat and its diverse move-pool. Pinsir is best used as a wallbreaker and can even sweep with Thunderwave support to slow down its faster opponents. Consider Pinsir an awesome lead with Choice Band or Swift Band, as it can typically force a first-turn switch and gain you a bit of momentum. With this hit-and-run tactic, Pinsir can break open your opponents team for something else to sweep. Tired of being being out-predicted with your Choice Pinsir? Consider Life Ball Swords Dance with a +Speed nature and ensure yourself a quick momentum grab against a stall-heavy opponent. Common checks include Solrock, Defensive Whiscash or Bellossom, and Torkoal; but in all honesty this bug can take down any "switch in". Consider Thief if you predict Solrock, as you can do up to 75% damage with a Swords Dance under your belt. The classic QuakeSlide combo hits everything in the game excluding Claydol but suffers against Solrock barring a lucky flinch. Consider Quick Attack only if you want to surprise a revenge killer Raichu that might feel comfy simply using Thunderbolt. Unfortunately this bug is quite slow, and thus it is forced out by revenge killers such as Fearow, Raichu, Scyther, etc. Promising teammates include Spikes users to help Pinsir sweep, the aforementioned paralysis spammers, and defensive options that can tank hits from any revenge killer. CB Metang with Pursuit is also helpful to remove Kadabra and also Fearow, which might Pursuit you.

I'm the one who created the sub bulk up set, was first used by laza when he shrekt kanyninelx. there was also a CC in which daryl was losing 5-6 to sebat, but pinsir came in and 5-0'd sebat. in the current meta its not great, but its worth putting. Was a lot better when poli had a lower base attack since it set up on that.
