What are the best teams out there for competitive battles?

Depends on which tier you are playing. There are no such thing as best team, but if you are interested in knowing what Pokemon are being played often. consider looking at OU tier list below.

I meant in-game pokemon teams, something like the first reply consisted of. I'm looking into competitive battling and just wondering what are some pokemon in all tiers a team should be built around?

You'll find more help in the competition alley than here, to be honest. There is no best team, and your team is only as strong as your team synergy is. 

 

OU is the most common tier, so you can't really go wrong picking six Pokemon from the list above... but of course, you should use some common sense when doing so - it won't be a wise idea to have six Fire-Type on your team, or have six physical attackers and zero special attackers. For a beginner, the key in competitive is building a team with as much balance as possible. The above list are Pokemon you are going to face VERY often, so consider each and every one of them as a threat and think about how your team will work against it
