A Legendary Music Battle: The Results

Recommended Posts

The staff found this a very fun contest to judge most of us had never judged a music contest before. It was an experience listening to each entry carefully to pick out parts to comment on. Personally, this contest taught me a lot about music that I did not know before, I googled a lot of musical terms and tried to get to grips with them before judging begun. This contest was a wonderful reminder of that people's talents can go beyond writing and drawing. Well done to all entries and congratulations to the winners posted below!

First Place - OrangeManiac

Judges unanimously commented on the fact that this piece was an amazing representation of Registeel and that OrangeManiac fulfilled the brief of this contest well. The technical side was impressive and complex, it's a well established piece of music that would not be out of place in a cartridge game. One thing that I personally liked about this entry was that the beat in parts of the song made me envision Registeel moving around slowly but strongly. This music is very befitting of a legendary Pokemon, well done!

Second Place - Firetail

Judges really loved the intro to this piece, the eruption sounds really set the scene for the arrival of the Groudon. We loved the fact that we would be able to guess that this piece was made for Groudon without having to look at the entry post. To quote fellow judge Eggplant; "The beat over the eruptive sfx is really catchy. And when the guitar comes in you're just 'awwwww yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'

Honorable Mention - Tenigramqd

This would not be out of place in one of the games or anime episodes. It has a very royal and grand feel to it, as you would expect from a legendary like Dialga.

Aww yussss :D

Really honored to win this one, there were a lot of quality entries.

Guess I'll write some info about my entry/about myself for fun. Read if bored.

Spoiler

Which program was my entry made of?

- FL Studio 11. I love the sequencer. Pros call it too "noob friendly" but I honestly don't see the reason, simplicity is just a good thing. It's fast to learn but you always learn new things from it you can utilize. Any questions of how to FL studio, feel free to ask me in PM.

Which synths were used?

- Most of the sounds on the track were from Sylenth1. It's a fairly new and really good digital synthesizer which is able to make great sounds and has great tweaking options to modify every sound for the ones you like. For this entry I'll admit I went full on preset. :'D

What percussion sounds were used?

- Just something from my library, kick is actually one of the default kicks from FL Studio.

What inspired to make this kind of a track?

- I'm an electronica producer. Therefor I'm kinda used to make my songs with the 8 bar pattern in which after every 8 bars something changes/adds/lessens while every 16/32/64 bars something "major" happens. Basic electronica. I'm used to make more minimal electronica where changes are much smaller but I had to fit stuff within 90 seconds and it turned okay.

I decided I make the entry D minor scale (harmonic minor, included in both bassline and arpeggio and the C# in bassline giving the Eastern feel). I tried to make some levels and I wrote the lead to make a cool changing D minor arpeggio. Then added the bassline. Then started to make some levels and added the arpeggios.

It sounded alright so I didn't master it too much

Have you got musical background?

- I've been playing classical piano about a decade but that changed to playing in rock bands and such. Some 5 years ago I interested about electronica and tried to learn how to make that as well.

If staff allows my shameless self-advertising here's my self-produced album of electronic music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSpKp_NGLJw

Props to Kay for being a good sport and making an entry for this despite not having much experience making music. His entry was pretty awesome, inb4 DJ KaynineXS!
