Ever since Gengar returned to OU, this pokemon has only proven one thing: it is as unhealthy and centralising as it used to be – if not more. Gengar’s versatility, amazing typing, decent speed and raw power limits OU teambuilding considerably. Gengar poses a threat as soon as it comes in play and punishes severely whoever underestimate it or doesn’t handle it properly.

In 2015, Magneton was a strong check to Gengar, but this is no longer the case. Special Choice Band and Life Ball hurt Magneton too much. Magneton is also not as viable as it used to be since the implementation of Shed Hull and the introduction of new special walls. Switching from Chansey to Blissey means Metal Sounds is useless. The presence of Snorlax and Blissey in OU also encourages Gengar to play Focus Punch which makes Magneton even less viable.

Being inherently a spin blocker, Gengar gives a hard time to Forretress and Cloyster. These pokemons need Rapid Spin to support their team, but also because they don't have reliable recovery. In the long run, if they are not able to remove Spikes, they will die. Therefore, Gengar indirectly supports Metagross and Gyarados – Life Ball powerhouses – by hurting the longevity of their respective counters.

Blissey seems to be the most popular counter, but struggles against Focus Punch and needs two damaging moves to bypass Disable. Perish Trap Gengar also gets rid of Blissey quite effectively. Will-O-Wisp/Pain Split Gengar shuts down offense to some extent. Snorlax, Heracross, Tauros, Slaking, Linoone can easily become liabilities if Bold Gengar is in the opposing team.

200 Atk Life Orb Gengar Focus Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 238-280 (65.7 - 77.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

200 Atk Gengar Focus Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Blissey: 182-216 (50.2 - 59.6%) -- 83.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Pursuit trapping is an interesting way to deal with Gengar – especially with the new Choice Scarf Pursuiter available. However, the fact that there isn’t a single Pursuit user that can OHKO Gengar even though Gengar can OHKO/2HKO or Burn most Pursuit users makes Pursuit trapping unreliable. Substitute + Disable also protects Gengar from being Pursuit trapped by Choice Scarf users.

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Absol: 114-135 (81.4 - 96.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Absol: 148-175 (105.7 - 125%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Absol Pursuit vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 116-138 (85.2 - 101.4%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Houndoom: 93-111 (62 - 74%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Houndoom Pursuit vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 84-98 (61.7 - 72%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heracross: 81-96 (52.2 - 61.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Heracross Pursuit vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 74-88 (54.4 - 64.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Gengar Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl: 138-164 (89 - 105.8%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Aerodactyl: 180-212 (116.1 - 136.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Choice Band Aerodactyl Pursuit vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 90-106 (66.1 - 77.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Pursuit trappers, with or without Choice Scarf, are usually revenge killers because switching on Gengar is extremely risky.

For all these reasons, the TC has decided to ban Gengar for being unhealthy and centralizing.

The TC considers Blissey as unhealthy for the OU meta. Unlike Chansey, probably the most centralising pokemon of OU not long ago, Blissey is no set up bait thanks to its decent Special Attack stat. Flamethrower, Ice beam, Thunderbolt, Hyper Voice and Psychic can put significant pressure on physical wall-breakers to prevent them from switching in. Blissey is for this reason pretty much untouchable until its moveset is scouted. The only pokemon that can safely come on Blissey and pressure it out is Snorlax. However, Snorlax doesn't punish Blissey that well since Blissey can still Cleric and Wish Support Snorlax's counters.

The combination of Blissey and Chansey in the same meta is rediculous. One can offer wish support while the other can offer cleric support. The presence of Blissey in OU prevents the regular Chansey's counters to be effective. Rhydon, Venusaur and Trapinch all work for Chansey, but don't work against Blissey. Natural Cure also allows them to switch endlessly from one to the other with little to no risk. Status and Leech Seed become completly pointless when they are both around.

Overall, Blissey seems to bring back OU to a pretty stale and undesirable meta. The combination of Blissey and Chansey is also bad for standard tournaments because some duels will easily last over an hour and delay entire tournaments. In ranked matchmaking, this combination limits players to one duel per ranked matchmaking period.
