Total eclipse cames from a sequel/spin off of the original alternative title, I actually don't even remember if its a different timeline or parallel to alternative events. And there is also the German title that got an anime, that was ok honestly.

Total Ecplise didn't explain shit about the events of Alternative, and didn't even explain anything about what was happening in the series. It is probably missing a season or two to complete everything, but the anime was so bad that it stopped there.  Just because it's part of the canon material doesn't make it the original work

It was the best anime adaptation of anything Muv Luv releated for years, but the original Muv Luv Alternative is something else. And yes, I didn't like it, it was too rushed, nothing about the world was explained, the background was completely off compared to Alternative where the presence of the Beta was actually oppressing. The VN was ok, didn't read the LNs, the anime was just bad.

I didn't really enjoy the first season of 86 and I don't plan to watch the second, but I guess there is people who likes it.

To me, it is just a subpar cgi-infested mecha with some forced tragedy points.

The cliches are annoying and I don't particularly feel anything for the other characters which might as well die on ep 1 and you wouldn't notice. This despite they trying really hard to sell their deaths as a tragic loss. They are not.

The plot brings some interesting ideas which are welcome but you can see their 'twists' two football fields away, I found myself most of the time thinking of how could have things played out had they made something different.

As for who likes it or why is it popular, IMO that's mostly on the chans simping the core plot for reasons I cannot express in these forums.

But hey, I want to see what Diano sees on it too

It's my own opinion but the anime Eighty Six gave me a new experience of war.

It shows us the consequences of humanity's fascism and of war.

There is a bunch of cliches for sure, but the studio took a way to keep us with them until the end.

I mean, sorry for the Mecha fans, but I hate Mecha animes. But here, it wasn't a problem for me.

The chara design, the animations, the story, and the musics, everything was perfectly matching.

Well, to be honest, the new season looks scary.

Only one episode available right now (two in some hours), but the story is taking an... unexpected way.

Why not, but still scary.

And axx, it's sad, but I think the popularity of this anime is high because Hiroyuki Sawano worked on some songs (according to most of comments I saw since the first trailers). It's not the only reason, but it's 100% one of the main reasons.

yo, was going to recommend Mushoku Tensei but nvm, the second part of season 1 is reminding me how cringe some parts of this anime are...

so, watch Takt No Destiny instead!

why? the animation (and actually the story is interesting, with good OSTs and voice actors)

I thought I might give a comment because I am a fan of 86, but I also agree with what Axx is saying here. You don't fall in love with the characters like you could in another similar cartoon (like same genre/niche), but I find the world pretty interesting and I want to know more about it. Characters and their relationships are my favourite part of any cartoon or show (less so than plot, setting, etc), but I still really enjoyed the character design and sort of the melancholy atmosphere of the cartoon.

Overall it is a bit dark and won't make you laugh much, but it is entertaining and I am looking forward to the second season quite a bit (haven't started yet!).

Did anyone watch Sonny Boy ? I got behind on it, but I will watch the remaining episodes. Also yuuki yuuna is going again !

then i'll recommended it. mushoku is the grandfather of isekai those tropes exist for a reason in mushoku it isnt following the others it created the tropes. there are a lot of parts that are or may make you uncomfortable but if done right thats not a bad thing. watching the boy in the sriped pajamas, american psycho, or most horror movies will make you uncomfortable and this is intentional as a way to start conversations, talk about things society doesnt like to talk about, and get you to feel. japanese people do not want to talk about hikikomoris, lolicons, neets, and the lewdness in some parts of society do to porn and the internet but now we are talking and so are many others. and ocne you start feeling emotion for a show it is much easier to feel other emotions and get invested, thats a big part of why horror movies work. you feel the fear them empathize with the characters who feel the same.
