I'm aware, I sometimes do sharpen more than necessary depending on the raw quality of the background, people haven't complained so far

try duplicating the layer and using high pass with a radius of 2.5 (filter > other > highpass). and set the highpass layer to overlay. it gives the same effect as sharpening but looks a lot cleaner.
