The Great Ditto Experiment

So, I have been gathering some data on which Pokeballs are the most cost efficient when catching massive amounts of Ditto. I have seen a lot of argument to this effect, and it sparked some academic interest.

My sample size is 200 Ditto per ball type, which is a bit small for this type of experiment, but I think the results are interesting. All ditto were caught at 1 HP and while asleep. They were all caught in the Desert Underpass. I did not record individual levels, as I wanted this to represent the full range of random leveled ditto. I may continue to record this data as I play, but for now, here are my findings:

200 Ditto - Pokeballs

Total Capture Rate:  29%

Balls Used: 689

Total Cost: 137,800 Poke Yen

200 Ditto - Great Balls

Total Capture Rate: 59%

Balls Used: 338

Total Cost: 202,800 Poke Yen

200 Ditto - Ultra Balls

Total Capture Rate: 99%

Balls Used: 203

Total Cost: 243,600

So, as you can see, in sum total Pokeballs are significantly cheaper then the rest of your choices. That said, during the experiment, it seemed considerably more wasteful to use the standard pokeball over an ultraball. This has been in the works for a bit, as it was fairly expensive (as you can see above) and my luck catching useful was more or less abysmal.

I think it is safe to assume that level RNG played some part in the total capture rates on the two lower tiers of Pokeballs, and the overall capture rate for Pokeballs is 25% and for Greatballs is between 50-55%. Even assuming that, Pokeballs, while it may seem wasteful, are significantly cheaper to use if you have the patience to do it.

Just as an aside Edit, if you are at all concerned with the amount of time, rather then PokeYen invested in a ditto hunt, use an UltraBall. The amount of frustration and time involved when catching with the lower two ball types is only worth it if you are really pinching pennies.

At any rate, discuss, comment, or talk about your favorite ditto catching methods!

Hmm, this makes me wonder whether or not PokeMMO uses a proprietary capture formula.

The generation 3 capture mechanics are here, and a valid calculator is here.

According to the calculator, a level 40 asleep Ditto should have these capture rates per ball:

Poké Ball: 27.973%

Great Ball: 40.958%

Ultra Ball: 62.424%

I don't think this is something to complain about since the capture rates seem to be higher in PokeMMO, but I do find it interesting. ^_^

Legit catch rates /=/ tested catch rates

shedninja has 1hp, so by switching to it the transform turn you can lower the ditto's hp to 1 without expending pp.

That is awesome. You could set it up so the ditto can do essentially nothing if the shedninja has ConfuseRay/Rest/Harden/ShadowBall (assuming you put it to sleep with a smeargle)

What about repeat balls?

I have not tested repeat balls in this experiment, though I have thought about it. If I get the gumption and free cash I will do this

Gen 6 capture rates are also a bit different: On Level 40 Ditto You have a 74.999% chance of capturing it per ball. Thus, you have at least a 50% chance of catching it within 1 ball and at least a 95% chance of catching it within 3 balls.

*snip*

That is assuming no other modifiers introduced in gen 6, such as critical capture, O Power, or environment type

Also keep in mind that there is a variable range of levels

Lastly, as I said, RNG does play its' part, and the sample size is too small to account for it.

But yeah, it does look like PokeMMO might use a proprietary formula, or I just RNG'd the hell out of it.

I'll still always use ultraballs, cause it saves me time, which is more valuable to me than the money lost if I had used pokeballs instead.

Totally agree. Also, faster catch rate will generally equal more money made, as you are cycling through dittos for potentially usable ones faster.

My main takeaway here was that all them Great Ball fanbois are using the least effective way to catch ditto. Great Balls are not significantly faster then Pokeballs, or significantly cheaper then Ultra Balls. Go for either extreme if you are on a hunt.

I have never in my life failed to catch a ditto sleeping at 1hp with an ultra ball. does it really happen?

You should ask Orange about his experience with that during the ditto catching event... He missed a lot. Like a totally illogical and improbable number of times.
