I'm a new player and just got intimidated...

Okay. So.... I'm going to be honest here. I never 'delved deep' into pokemon or anything. I just played the game. Because it was fun. I liked capturing Pokemon. I liked battling them. I liked leveling up. I liked going through the storyline and bringing myself up to be awesome. I played it like an rpg. Because that's sort of what it felt like to me.

I came onto the forums because I was looking for a simple answer of  the question "Can I delete my character?". I screwed up his look and found that I couldn't change it without paying real money. And despite what the trailer told me about customization being a big feature... it feels very limited and honestly... I feel sort of lied to there. That I have to pay real money for any character customization. I feel like that kinda sucks. But whatever... I can get past that.

But here's what scared me.

Everywhere on the forums I see a bunch of stuff about Effort Points and IV's and breeding and all this advanced stuff. And how it's all apparently broken, and how you have to learn all these weird mechanics and do calculations and dump hours into it just to be remotely decent at the game. What the hell?

So... apparently. I can't just... play the game and be decent at it. I  can't just catch Pokemon and have fun and battle people with my caught pokemon. Because I'll get my ass handed to me because I don't have enough "hidden breeding power"???????

And on top of that, to raise the stats properly I need to fight a whole bunch of the same pokemon? Like to raise speed I have to grind Zubats???

This.... is too much. I just want to play Pokemon. I liked the game because (I guess I was wrong though), it was simple. Or at least it felt simple. I want to play what I consider to be Pokemon, not breeding simulator. But I also don't want to suck at the game.

So. really, I have to ask the community of this place. Should I even bother?

So far it's seeming like I might have more fun just playing a singleplayer pokemon game where I don't have to worry about all this breeding and weird other shit. I thought that having a multiplayer Pokemon game sounded great, but if I have to get into all this weird grinding (other than levelling up my pokemon), and breeding just to be able to have a decent match against someone... forget it.

The single player handheld has all the same features you dread. Breeding, EVs, IVs, natures.

I mean, you can probably win some battles with 'terrible pokemon' provided they're movesetted correctly and you know what you're doing, in battle.

In a lot of the forum users' standards, "being remotely decent at the game" implies having the skill to get into round 3 of a tournament.

You need all this stuff to be the best of the best. But they shouldn't keep you from catching stuff and dueling other people like you in vermillion. Feel free to ignore the advanced competitive features. Same way you didn't use them in the handheld, but they were there.

About customization. Yeah, the "delete character" button doesn't exist yet. You can make up to 3 per account, and you can make new accounts.

Changing your face is the biggest thing that really requires you paying money. Any other items can be bought off other players, some more common ones even in stores like Celadon's 4th floor for in-game cash.

I can definitely say I understand in regards to the whole battling aspect. When I first started playing I had no idea about IV's, EV's, or the actual meaning of natures and such, despite having played Pokemon since the beginning. Learning there were hidden ways your Pokemon was better than its own species was really strange and a shocking concept for me. I'm not a competitive player/battler at all. I really enjoy battling, but I'm not really into the obtaining/creating of perfect Poke's. Just battling with what I catch/have is plenty fun for me, or creating interesting/strange move combos.

What I would suggest is perhaps while starting to learn about this, maybe take a look at the Competition Alley section, or and/join a team and ask questions to gather more information to try it out for yourself. It really helped me having a hands on approach to it, testing it, and gaining a basic understanding of it. Tournaments are hosted that you could spectate too, for another peek into the competitive battle scene, which has also helped me in learning new things in the comp. world on numerous occasions.

But I wouldn't be too crestfallen, as there are plenty of people willing to help those who are interested with battling. And if competitive play isn't for you, that's just fine too.

actually people can't be bothered to help new people anymore, they'd rather just grind for themselves because theres literally no point in helping a newbie right now because hes gonna quit the game because he doesnt have enough invested in the game and hes gonna quit from a major depression that this grindmmo causes. Oh well its a shame that new comp players are getting so rare , i blame this new breeding system that literally sucks up your life for absolutly no reason other then ''we want to make you grind''.

I'm no admin, I cannot reach to any specific numbers regarding how many accounts there are with how many hours on average but I'm pretty sure 95% of the accounts of this game have under 200 hours of playing time. I can tell that a huge majority of the people who joined this game just played for fun, caught their whatever Pokemon and beat the game while utilizing the MMO feature for getting some Pokemon that was hard to reach for them or just playing the game through with their friends. These were the casuals, the people who didn't either even know about the competitive and complicated side of Pokemon or simply just didn't care. The reason why you see such amount of discussion about all of this in the forums are that the casual players usually stopped playing very soon, probably before even joining the forums. Because honestly, if you don't care for that breeding and raising a competitive Pokemon and battling then this game offers no end-game activities so it will just get boring really fast and those casuals quit soon. Here in the forums are the people who sticked up possibly even for multiple thousands of hours and they are talking about easily the best activity in the game which is competitive battling (which includes grinding). So no, you're in probably in the majority of the people currently online who doesn't know/care about any of this stuff but since it's the only end game activity in this game then that's why we're all acting here like grinding is normal "part of the game".

Learning the base IV,EV mechs are easier than you think, should take you least a week or so, i'm sorry to break it to you but this game nowhere near as fun as the original games, unless you want to stay as a noob with random caught/bred pokes, coz the grinding factor will take its toll after a while, my suggestion is, look at a few guides for the basics, test out breeding watch a few tournaments and see if its your thing or not.

Kinda makes me mad when i see newer players asking for advice on their story teams in channel chat and hear people commenting on ivs, natures and egg moves like it matters at all against NPCs "you need a minimum of +20 IV on this" "golem is bad" and garbage like that, just use the pokes you like, even if you do get into the comp scene you can always try to make your favorite pokes work, once you know what you are doing you play on your own terms, granted you most likely wont be as successful as someone running the absolute best poke for every role but it will still have that fun factor you experienced when you first beat the pokemon league in the handheld games.

Just don't go overboard and use def curl + ice ball walrein at the masters invitational like i did hehe.

yeah i agree 100% on this, with old breedings players could help each other , heck i coulda get a staff breeders.

yea breeding used to be better when you could help people, like you used to be able to just give people good uts for nothing. But then those good uts become rather expensive and you couldnt afford to give them away. I guess the best thing to do was to gain knowledge of up coming changes in breeding, then get a whole bunch of pokemon, mareep for example, before they changed breeding while people were willing to give them away for free and stockpile them for the changes in breeding that you knew were coming.

I shared alot of these feelings as well when I started out. I was always seeing stuff in trade chat about clean Pokemon and such never knowing what that meant, for reference it means 0 EVs. After a while I started getting some advice on EVs and IVs and eventually bred some decent Gastly, albeit under the old system. Where am I now? Well, I don't know a whole lot about the competitive side, but I have caught on a tiny bit. I'm still trying to learn some more when I can. It's a painstaking process, but once you look past all the numbers and such it's a pretty fun system to work with.

You're not being lied too. There is lots of character customization. Sure, you have to pay for a whole remake of your character, but listen up. You can go to Celadon city, go to the massive store place there and you can buy lots of cool customization stuff for your character for in-game currency. You can get stuff like hats, new hair, bags, glasses and a load more. You can even go to the arcade area in Celadon city and with coins from the arcade you can buy Tuxido's and Team rocket Uniform. You can also spend IRL money to buy lots more crazy stuff customization stuff(or buy a makeover). The staff do work, server's aren't cheap.. they need some sort of income to keep it running. You don't even need to pay if you really don't want to, but complaining about it is pretty bad imo.
