It's simple once you really try to learn it. Once you start doing somewhat OK against other competitive people and just dominate the people that aren't, you can't stop. Link to comment

It is entirely possible to play Pokemon without doing any of that. That's one of the beautiful things about the game. It's as deep or as simple as you want it to be. Link to comment
