EV Training Effectively in Level 50 Meta

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of people dumping 252 EV's into pokemon with an even IV and it makes me cringe so I decided to make this guide.

Even IV's: (0,2,4,6,...,30)

If your IV is an even number, the highest amount of EV's that will benefit you is 248.

To get your first 'bonus stat' you need to put 8 EV's, and then every additional 8 after that will give you one more stat point at level 50.

Odd IV's: (1,3,5,7,...,31)

The only time you should ever put 252 EV's is if your IV is an odd number.

To get your first 'bonus stat' you need to put 4 EV's, and then every additional 8 after that will give you one more stat point at level 50.

Exceptions:

Bonus Stats: Sometimes when you add enough ev's for the next stat you will get 2 stat points instead of one.

This generally only happens with pokemon who have a very high number in a stat, with a beneficial nature.

(careful snorlax in example)

Negative Natures: With a negative nature it can take up to 12 EV's to get your first extra stat point.

(rash gyarados in example [-spdef])

How to do it yourself:

  1. Find out your EXACT IV's in-game for the pokemon you are going to train.
  2. Go to: https://pokemonshowdown.com/damagecalc/
  3. (optional) Change to DPP Calculator.
  4. Enter the Pokemon, EXACT IV's, and nature of your in-game pokemon.
  5. Enter the EV's you plan to use, then click the arrow to take it down 4 EV's.
  • If the stat goes down, you know you are not wasting any EV's
  • If the stat does not go down, you know you can put 4 less EV's and still achieve the same stat.

You know you messed up if:

If you know your pokemon has a stat of 31, but the IV range at level 50 is 30-31.

The actual IV should ALWAYS be at the bottom of the range.

If the actual IV is at the higher range, it means you can take off 4 EV's and have the same stat, which means you wasted 4 EV's.

Might be worth mentioning leftovers numbers. Like leftovers heals 1/16 of your max hp, but rounding down always. So if your hp is divisible by 16, its more efficient, and then put the other hp evs into def/sp def. And if you want, you could include information about how evs/nature have an effect on a pokemon with a very high base stat like cloyster's defense or snorlax's hp
