The move Curse on Snorlax is banned

No referees, if your opponent breaks a rule, screenshot battle chat and post it in this thread(this is mostly for the curse thing) or if there is a dc, freeze, or something along those lines, and someone loses because of it, the decision on whether a rematch will be allowed will be left to the opponent.

The move Curse on Snorlax is banned

why

Curselax banned. alrighttyy theeennn

because we wanted to try this

After much consideration and discussion, also a public discussion in this thread, we have concluded that Snorlax indeed falls under Uber definitions and should be banned from Tier 1 (OU) play. However, we recognized that Snorlax himself is not the root of the problem. In stead we see that the problem itself lies in his ability to use the move: 'Curse'. Therefore we decided that the move Curse on Snorlax will be banned from future Tier 1 (OU) play.

Snorlax is already a formidable Pokémon that should be considered while making any team, either for using it or to have at least a solid answer to it. Snorlax did not only have good walling capabilities but also put immense pressure on the opponent. The move 'Curse' only strengthened this affect and made Snorlax a rather safe pick with absolutely no drawbacks. We believe that this is one of the reasons why Curse is so overwhelming. The fact that there is absolutely no amount of prediction or skill involved in pressing the Curse button made us believe that Snorlax (with Curse, from here on; Curselax) was having a negative influence on our meta.

While it’s true that Snorlax only has two other moveslots if you consider Curse and Rest, it does not mean that Snorlax has problems with coverage. Curse makes it even so that you do not need to hit your opponent super-effectively to do big damage to them. Also consider the fact that Snorlax has a great move pool, so the number of Pokémon that can switch in to him with little to no risk (aka: counters) diminishes greatly. With a Curse under his belt, Curselax can easily wall around 70% of the common meta. This number is huge if you factor in that using Curse has absolutely no drawbacks in normal battle conditions.

However, in the public discussion we already established that the offensive pressure a Curselax has can be dealt with in many ways. Even so, there are only a few things that can truly stop a Curselax from doing what it really does: walling, stalling and setting up. Not any physical wall can deal with Curselax, in fact there are only a few that reliably ‘beat’ a Curselax and stop it from setting up. Skarmory and Weezing are the two best answers as they can either set up spikes or haze and do damage respectively. The list of actual things that can stop it effectively from setting up is not very long. This is why Snorlax falls under the defensive characteristics of Ubers which is:

‘A Pokémon is uber if, in common battle conditions, it is able to wall and stall out a significant portion of the metagame.’

It is safe to assume that Snorlax can easily get a Curse up and when he does get this Curse he walls an even bigger portion of the metagame than he already did. Not only that but the offensive power he receives from Cursing only strengthens his walling capabilities which separates it from other good walls and tanks.

Curselax greatly cripples teambuilding in general and is also a reason why obscure things like Charm Umbreon or Roar Vaporeon are being used. It is easy to use, but hard to fight against. Again, there are no drawbacks in using a Curselax I can’t stress this fact enough. With Curse counters become checks and checks become unreliable switch ins. Using Skarmory and Weezing almost becomes mandatory just to be able to reliably beat this thing. Of course, they can be used to wall other physical attackers as well but their main purpose is to stop Curselax from rampaging.

If your counter is gone nothing can reliably deal with a Curselax anymore, just because a Curse make checks like Heracross, Aerodactyl and Ursaring less effective.

Curse on Snorlax will be banned because, it’s overwhelming defensive characteristics allow it to make far better use of his good offenses, we believe it restricts team building in a big way, it’s a no risk move and because it’s so easy to build around a Curselax in general.

Lastly, we can’t enforce this decision in the ‘official’ matchmaking system in game (yet). It’s up to the players to enforce it themselves. Like a sort of community-code. We ask of tournament hosts to clarify Curselax is banned from standard play if they plan to host a tournament. However, they are free to disregard this if they wish to do so.
