I've seen multiple people disappointed they cannot whisper their opponent during a battle, usually because of strange characters in their names. If both parties have an option ticked such as:
"Open Chat Window On PVP Battle Start" [X]
I would suggest that this option default to enabled, to encourage players to chat while battling and help to make them aware of the option.
Just something that crossed my mind a few times now, I figure the chat windows are quite under utilized at this moment anyway.
