How to play the Halloween event (2021)

I got a lot of messages asking how to play the event, so rather than answering the same questions in a fairly lengthy way I decided to do a write-up.

There are two primary resources that players chase during the event; Spooky Candies and Special Candies.

Let's talk about Spooky Candies first.

  • Spooky Candies are acquired when you beat a Trick-Or-Treater.
  • There are 6 kinds of Trick-Or-Treater: Vampire, Witch, Buster, Mummy, Zombie, and Ghost.
  • They will tend to use themed teams with pokemon about level 80 (if your highest-level party member is level 100).
  • Players will call out their location in global, often with a region or letter abbreviation for the region (Eg "Vamp K16" means the vampire is on route 16 in Kanto).
  • There are three Trick-Or-Treaters active in each region at any one time
  • Defeating a Trick-Or-Treater yields 1x Spooky Candy

Next, we'll talk about Special Candies

  • Special Candies are acquired when you beat the Miniboss
  • The Miniboss replaces one of the Jack-o-Lanterns outside of houses across each region
  • There are 4 Minibosses, one for each region, and they rotate every 40 minutes (real-time).
  • The Miniboss lanterns are distinguished by movement and a purple, ethereal aura
  • The Miniboss is a triple battle with 3 Pumpking Minions; these are chosen randomly from Pumpmage, Pumpkin Knight, Pumprince, Pumprincess, Pumpreaper, and Lil' Pump.
  • Defeating the Miniboss yields 1x Special Candy

Now that we understand how to get Candies, let's go through what they're used for.

Candies are redeemed at several locations for different things depending on the type of Candy. The locations are:

  • Kanto: North of Lavender Town
  • Hoenn: West of Fallarbor Town
  • Sinnoh: East of Solaceon Town
  • Unova: Driftveil City (North)

Spooky Candies are redeemed for Goodie Bags. 5x Spooky Candy is redeemed for 1x Goodie Bag. Ensure you have 5x the number of Candies as you want bags in the redemption screen.

Special Candies are redeemed to fight the Pumpking.

  • 1x Special Candy is consumed for each challenge, whether you win or lose.
  • The Pumpking can be fought on one of two difficulties; Easy or Hard
  • You need to defeat him on Easy mode to unlock Hard mode
  • Defeating the Pumpking on Easy mode rewards you with 5x Goodie Bag
  • Defeating the Pumpking on Hard mode rewards you with 5x Pumpking Goodie Bag and applies the King's Fall particle to all pokemon in your team

Goodie Bags and Pumpking Goodie Bags contain battle items, TMs, and rarely, cosmetics unique to this year's Halloween event.  You can open them by using them from your inventory.

Finally, there are frequent Pokemon swarms in the overworld during the event. These swarms work identically to normal swarms, except that the pokemon in them have a small chance to have a particle effect applied to them which is unique to this year's Halloween event. You will see this effect play in battle during the encounter if a Pokemon has it.

I hope this helps you understand what to do in this year's Halloween event and what the activity in global chat means. Have fun and stay spooky!

Why is this so late? its like 3 days late?

This tbh. It’s cool there’s a guide now but with only 2 days left in the event it doesn’t seem worth the hassle. This event is cool and all but it’s really difficult if you don’t already have well built teams and the whole having to be dependent on other players to find the locations of the trick or treaters seems like bad design as I’m in unova and I never see anyone posting about the kids there and I have yet to come across one. Next year the event should start like 2 weeks before and have a guide released with updated info for that year. 5 days just seems way too little for the amount of exploring/grinding you have to do just to get anything from the event.
