Taking a look deep inside: Finding your hidden power

Recommended Posts

Hidden Power is a strange move whose type (which can be anything except normal) and base power (which can range anywhere from 30-70) is determined by a pokemon's IVs thats obtainable from the rocket game corner. Starmie doesn't usually need hidden power because it can learn so many different types of special based moves that play off its great special attack stat, but what about Arcanine whose great base 110 attack can really only be utilized with ExtremeSpeed? What about Jolteon who has to retreat from or fall to every ground type in the game? This is where Hidden Power finds its niche.

Since Hidden Power's attributes are based on your pokemon's IVs there's nothing you can do to affect what they'll be, but you can use the formulas used to calculate them to learn what to look for in the marketplace.

If you have a pokemon whose IVs you already know and want to know what it's hidden power will be without doing the calculation yourself, psypoke offers a table and a calculator here: http://www.psypokes.com/dex/hp.php

If you have a pokemon who's at level 50 whose exact IVs you dont know and you want to figure out it's hidden power without using a TM on it, ThinkNice has provided an easy to follow guide explaining how to do so: https://forums.pokem...hp-at-level-50/

Hidden Power Type: ((hp + 2(att) + 4(def) + 8(spe) +16(spa) + 32(spd))x15)/63
values of stats are determined by whether an IV is even or odd. if it is even
the value is 0 and if it is odd the value is 1.

0=Fighting 1=Flying 2=Poison 3=Ground 4=Rock 5=Bug 6=Ghost 7=Steel 8=Fire
9=Water 10=Grass 11=Electric 12=Psychic 13=Ice 14=Dragon 15=Dark

Hidden Power Power: (((hp+2(att)+4(def)+8(spe)+16(spa)+32(spd))x40)/63)+30
values of stats are determined by dividing iv by 4. if it has remainder of 0 or 1
the value is 0, if it has remainder of 2 or 3 the value is 1.

The more IVs a pokemon has that leave remainders of 2 or 3 if divided by 4 the more powerful Hidden Power is, however you see each IV is weighted differently in the formula. If the special defense IV doesn't have a value that leaves a large remainder, the max power of your hidden power will drop from 70 to 49. Having just the special attack and special defense IVs will leave you with a base power of 60. Some popular Hidden Powers, like Flying for Aerodactyl, Charizard, Jumpluff, Crobat, and Dragonite, really don't do any good unless they have a power greater than 60, since they can each also learn aerial ace which has a base power of 60. When looking for a specific hidden power while training, farming, or windowshopping pokemon, it's imperative that the special defense IV leaves a remainder of 2 or 3 when divided by 4. Additionally, all special attack type hidden powers have an odd numbered special defense IV. All physical type hidden powers require an even number for the special defense IV except for steel, but steel is an undesired hidden power type for almost any pokemon except for forretress maybe, so if you're looking for a physically based hidden power type and you have an odd numbered special defense IV you should keep farming.

odd # IVs that provide value of 1: 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31
even # IVs that provide value of 1: 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30
odd # IVs that provide value of 0: 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29
even # IVs that provide value of 0: 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28

If want to, you can add that if the IVs are : 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, or 31 you use 1 as the variable. If IVs are: 0, 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 20, 21, 24, 25, 28, or 29 then use 0 as the variable when calculating the Power of Hidden Power.

Just think that it will make a little simpler for some math challenged people to understand lol.

they should make an item so u can check your hidden power in game because sometimes you have a low level pokemon and you dont want to train him a lot and then when you train him and see that his hidden power sucks u are like meh...
if you're playing through the story for the first time i can see how it would be a drag, but if you check ivs every level and compare the different ranges u can find exactly what they are before level 30 and it doesn't take very long to get to that level.

good call.

As nice as it is to look at all the formulas for it, once you know your IVs exactly the easiest way to find HP Type/Damage would be to use an online calculator such as: http://www.metalkid.info/Pokemon/Calculators/HiddenPower.aspx
The metalkids IV calculator even calculates your possible HPs as you narrow down the IVs as well which is great. Maybe you could just link that at the start or end or something.

Still water is *2 against rock/ground and in order to have it you need to have both attack and defense ivs being 30 and the rest needs to be even numbers. It would be good too if it was grass .

bump, reorganized a little and added a note to help players recognize what signs to look for that a pokemon's hidden power sucks before they spend too much time training it to find out. will add more tricks as i think of them, and still looking for hidden power suggestions.

Follow the manual instructions guide here.

http://psypokes.com/dex/hp.php

You can't tell the power though

EDIT: You could actually estimate the power if you use it against a friend's poke w/ known stats, etc

a have a few pokemon that are already level 50 and i dont know the exact ivs :S

Any EASY way to determine their HP without using the HP TM?
You can try fiddle around with EV reducing berries and vitamins on each stat to narrow them down. Use something like this: http://metalkid.info/Pokemon/Calculators/Stat.aspx to determine how much EVs you need on each stat to determine which IV it is. You may need an Amnesia Brace though if you need to do gain over 100 EVs for some stats.

You are all making it so complicated at lvl50

4EV=1IV worth so with ranges of 2 IVs simply take out the 10 EVs from 252 to 242 by using a berry (if you maxed out a stat) and it will now work as a 240 pokemon which mean 12 EVs which mean 3 IV changes. If you now relog and recheck the IVs, the range will involve 1 of the previous IVs as well as the 1 who wasn't among the previous IVs.

The one that were in the previous range is your pokemons true IV point.

Step 2.

You now got 10 free EVs to spend. Well find the 2 stats you want to check first and give 4 EVs to each of them before relogging.

Now that you logged in again you can check the IV ranges again and you will this time as well get 1 of the previous IVs and 1 different. The one previous IV is your pokemons true IV.

At this point you should know 3 out of the 6 IVs at exact value and you should be able to see where this guide is going but I will finish it anyway.
Step3.

Get EV berries for the 2 stat you checked and get rid of those 4 EVs before finding 2 new stats to EVtrain 4 EVs at

Relog and recheck IVs. As before, the 1 IV that is still in the possible range is your pokemons true IV

You should know 5 out of the 6 IVs. EVberry those out and then wrap this up by finishing the 6th IV. Since you havent done this before, chances are good that this is another "252 maxed out IV range because convenient" In this case, just EVberry it and relog and you can now see the exact IV here as well and you can know the exact HP and power as well.

If not 252 maxed out something, just train it 4 EVs and you can now see the IVrange after relogging anyway.
Step 4.

If you liked the HP type and power, too bad. You now have to go gamble for your HP TM (or trade for it).
I will go and even do this with a pokemon where I add pictures into spoilers for each step
