help getting set up on a Mac

So I started downloading the file for Mac and running it and it wouldn't work. Every time after trying to open it it gives me a message that says its already running but then gives me the option for yes or no. After I hit yes it just gives me a notification that says it is being run for the first time. That opens up terminal and Ive tried all the commands to start it and looked at other forums where people had similar problems and none of those suggestions worked either. I tried the portable zip as well but still no luck. Ive also had someone send me the file just to try it. We could not figure out anything I was doing wrong or differently. Any suggestions or ideas would be great thanks
