Memento on smeargle?

Hi  all, ive been trying to sketch memento with my smeargle but Im not able to. I tried using a muk with memento in a double battle, and taunting him before he uses memento to get him to fail, then trying to sketch it but sketch fails. What can i do?

Ok so:

-Get in a wild double battle with your Memento user and a mon that has Protect

-Use Memento on the Protect mon

-Use an item, a Pokeball or whatever on your Memento user's turn and switch your Protect user to your Smeargle

-Use Sketch on the Memento user (assuming Smeargle is faster, otherwise waste another item)
