REVERT THE BATON PASS CHANGES

Recommended Posts

The change was made to balance the move in PvE, particularly against the Elite Four. If one move can completely and fairly reliably cheese an instance that is supposed to be difficult, something is wrong and it needs to be addressed. We initially tried to balance it by adding more Focus Sashes to the builds to force the usage of entry hazards, but it clearly wasn't enough, and it's something we can't reasonably keep doing for all future content. No other move requires this sort of attention, it's quite silly to compare Baton Pass to moves like Scald and Ice Beam.

Realistically the options to fix it were either to remove the single trait that made it broken (stat passing) or to remove it from the game entirely. We decided that it was better to still allow Sub passing and dry passing than to completely take it away. It's not as overwhelming of a strategy as it once was, but that is the entire point of the change.

We don't have any interest in splitting this move into PvE and PvP variants either. Although the split approach works for Thief, doing it for Baton Pass would result in it being banned and unusable again in the most played form of PvP. Taking a move away from standard OU/UU/NU purely to buff it in LC/doubles is very difficult to justify. It's an approach that should be used sparingly too as it can be quite confusing when a move functions completely differently against players and AI trainers.

We're not reverting it, sorry.
