Ability Pickup doesn't work!?

Can someone explain me how does this ability works because it seems to not do anything. I have bought a Meowth with this ability, i put him in my team but he doesn't do anything, he wasn't collecting any item, so i bought 4 more and i put them in my team too, but even though they still weren't picking up anything after battles or after some time.

If you are Italian you cam explain it Italian too since I'm am from Italy.

you have the pokemon with pickup at first place in your team, then it sometimes picks up stuff after battle.

ciao, in PokeMMO gli abilita Pickup funziona piu divertente dello console. Puoi leggere qui:

I might be wrong but some areas might not give anything with pickup.In frontier hoenn i dont remember to have ever picked up anything while fainting tentacruel hordes.
