(Solved) Stuck on first gym leader in Unova

First, I just want to say that I'm very new to Pokemon. I've been trying to beat the first gym leader but my party keeps on getting knocked out with the opponent using any fire based move. I have Purrloin (lvl 10) and Snivy (lvl 15) but I still can't beat the one fire type. Am I doing something wrong? I've been grinding the starting area for a while and even stocking up on potions but I still can't win.
