RMT (RATE MY TEAM) Magnezone-Gyarados Core [OU]

Recommended Posts

I recently came back to PokeMMO and find myself forced to build up a whole new team as my old one was both terrible and made in the Curselax Era.

I had a hard time finding evey info I wish in order to build a team efficient enough in the OU Metagame. Especially common sets used on PokeMMO, so some of my calcs may be wrong, or some choices might fall totally off?

The team is based around the powerhouse Sub-DD Gyarados, and its most beloved teammate Magnezone :

Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 208 HP / 252 SpA / 48 Spe
Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power Fire

Magnezone main role is to delete Ferro, Forretress or Scizor from the board in order to ease Gyarados sweeping potential. It features very useful resistances too (Eletrik and rock) covering Gyarados weaknesses. I can either use it with a scarf so Superpower Scizor isn't a problem, or with Specs so Ferro dies quicker. It runs enough speed to outrun non invested scizor with specs. But I don't know waht' the basic set is for Scizor. Scarf outrun Jolly fully invested Scizor anyway.

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 88 HP / 252 Atk / 168 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Bounce

Gyarados can be considered the main sweeper of the team. Mag opening many setup opportunities for it. 168 speed is enough to outrun fast threats like Jolteon at +1, the HP optimize Sub resistances and leftovers recovery. I'm not totally sure about Bounce, but seeing that Conk is everywhere and that few pokes can tank flying/water coverage it might be my best shot. Other choice might be Edge?

Mienshao @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- High Jump Kick
- U-turn
- Hidden Power Ice
- Stone Edge

This is somehow my cheap Terrakion. Offensive check to many things, and potent revenge killer against the likes of Volcarona, Salamence or Dragonite. Resistance to rocks plus Regenerator are feats that I liked on that mon. Plus it's faster than Hydreigon!

My main concern about that set is that it needs 6IVs and that's not something cheap to breed.

Starmie @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Surf
- Thunderbolt
- Psyshock

Mandatory water type, second fighting resitances, and IMO best spinner in the tier. Pyshock over Ice beam, because I kinda don't deal with Gengar with the team. Surf is run over Hyro Pump for accuracy and PPs, plus Latis or Kyurem aren't there, so I felt I had no need for that extra punch.

553.png

Krookodile @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pursuit
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

This is a beloved pokemon of mine, and a potent pursuit trapper (that I already have breed) because ghost types can be a problem for Mien spamming HJK. It can serve as a great cleaner with scarf+moxie and can profit from Gyarados weakening physical walls. Tyranitar could be a choice here, but I wasn't confident with sandstorm active (and, again, Krook is already breed :D)

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 48 Def / 208 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Gyro Ball
- Stealth Rock
- Spikes
- Leech Seed

Last mon is the glue, laying hazards and being the fat wall it is. I really needed a strong grass resistance and hazard setter. Ferrothorn was the obvious choice there. My concern about this mon is that it can become setup fodder pretty easily, especially considering that the rest of the team is more offensively oriented.

If anyone have feedbacks, I'm taking them! Breeding can be a long journey, expensive and I'd love to commit only on mons that will really shine!

Thx for the advices!

Items will move around I think between specs, scarfs and orb. And maybe lefties for starmie.

Isn't bounce + intimidate on gyarados enough to deal with conk? Original thought on psyshock was dealing with special walls, but they might be less common than conk.

no, because gyarados is not a safe switch against conkel. if you switch and conkel hits facade or thunder punch gg gyarados. Also i want to say that i think choise scarf mixed mienshao is not a good idea, no lifeorb + no evs on special attack doesnt 1hitKO Gliscor and gives the opponent free turn to switch to special wall. Volcarona HP Electric can also put you on trouble if your mienshao died or miss stone edge.

So I should simply drop HP Ice? I like that Idea as it eases the breeding process on the Mienshao.

HP elektric is common on Volca?

I will probably have trouble swithin in conk if T.Punch is that common. Maybe switch ferro for something else? Is there any Conk switch-in capable of laying hazards?

You should get rid of krokodile, use hippowdon instead of it to handle conkeldurr and put rocks, so you can use power whip on ferrothorn instead of dual hazzards, knock is still an option to punish greedy conkel players and making magnezone job easier.

Also change thunderbolt for ice beam on starmie to hit dragontypes such as hydreigon which is threatening for your team, and having zone and ferro for water types is enough.

In my mind, Starmie's role was to win anti-spin wars ; so I believed t.bolt more useful than beam for the likes of Jellicent. And Mienshao is already a great answer to hydreigon offensively speaking (and to usual DD dragon like dragonite and salamence with edge/hp ice).

And as I will find myself spamming HJK with Mien, I prefer krook being able to remove ghosts types, over switching it for a more passive pokemon (which is 2HKOed by ice punch anyway). Also, i'd rather have no sandstorm active as Gyarados will hopefully hide behind a sub and starmie be spamming life orb attacks.

Maybe I should accept the really offensiveness of the team? Or rebuild it from core to match a more balanced playstyle.
