  1. I completely agree. I personally hope that they never release Johto that way I can enjoy the anticipation forever! It is the best part after all, so I don't see why I'd ever want it to end. Johtomorrow
  2. I don't think that it has been covered anywhere in the thread, but what happens if a team that hasn't been in World Cup tries signing up? They clearly can't get donations from 3 players who played for that team if it never existed before, does that mean that it's automatically excluded from being able to sign up, or is there a different procedure for them to sign up?

  5. The Bee Snake's Chance by JeanMarcH Some people fall in love with their favorite Pokemon at first sight. Others discover their favorites after a pokemon they liked grew even more on them. For a few, their favorites end up stealing their hearts by pure accident. This tale is one of such stories, one where a Pokemon meant for abandonment ended up finding hope and a lovely home. For this story, we shall go back to Christmas of 2013. Under the Christmas tree there was a copy of Pokemon Y waiting for me. I had been excited to try some of the new features and quality of life improvements that the first 3d entry of the main series were going to offer us. An easier time breeding competitive ready pokemon, friend safaris, wonder trade, all things I was looking forward to. To try the wonder trade feature out, I ended up catching a Dunsparce in an early route. After multiple failed attempts to connect online (because the servers were up all day due to the amount of people who tried going online), I couldn’t trade it like I originally planned to. Since I wanted to play the game more than I wanted to get rid of the bee patterned snake. I progressed and quickly encountered the game’s first gym. “If you want to stay, here’s your chance to prove yourself” I thought to myself as I sent Dunsparce. As if it has read my thoughts, it decided to not only perform well but sweep the gym on its own. “Ok, you’re okay this time, but you’re still on thin ice buddy” was how I reacted after that small feat. The adventure continued without any major hurdle or anything noteworthy until we reached the second gym. Similarly to the first gym, Dunsparce swept the gym on its own. Considering that it was a rock gym this time, it looked more impressive, but not enough for me to change my tune. We quickly got to the 3rd gym, and this time it would be its biggest challenge yet: a fighting gym. Dunsparce comes in and starts doing its thing. Mienfoo goes down without much struggle from Dunsparce, same with Hawlucha. It’s now Machoke’s turn, and as hard as Dunsparce tried, it still wasn’t enough for it to take the Machoke down. Whatever pokemon I had in the back finished it off, and I realized that by now, the wonder trade would be back up, and I would finally try it out. I try going online, and this time, it finally succeeds. I select the wonder trade, quickly select my Pokemon, and the trading cutscene shows that I’m about to get an Eevee. I was pretty excited to get that for the random Flabébé I caught at some point. What, did you really expect me to have traded Dunsparce at that point? Come on, I’m not that heartless. After seeing it do its best, I couldn’t help myself from getting attached to that little underdog. After the effort it put in I figured that it would be able to handle most of the major hurdles of the run, and that’s exactly what happened: remaining gyms? Dunsparced. Elite 4? Dunsparced. Evil organisation that wants to do a genocide for the sake of beauty? Dunsparced. Giant bacon-like bird of death? That’s right, freaking Dunsparced. It might’ve been something along the line of 12 hours, maybe 16 at most, but it had been enough for me to turn my opinion of Dunsparce from wonder trade fodder from an underdog I cheered for during each of my battles, with the worst part being that it probably would’ve never happened if Nintendo knew how to run their servers. And while it might be a story that looks like it would be forgotten or replaced with another similar story in a future run, but if you ever see me at a live tournament, you might see a familiar friend accompanying me.
  6. In the current state of the dubs meta, Safety Goggles probably wouldn't change too much (Ironically I think that stopping Rage Powder would be bigger factor to use it than to stop Spore) but its addition would be enough for me to start a legitimate discussion on whether sleep clause would still be needed in doubles, since there would then be enough viable counterplay around a lack of sleep clause.
  7. First of all, welcome back! Second of all, I'll just share my story since it's basically a real-life application of the prompt. I used to play back in 2013, and came back in 2021. My friends list had maybe 1 person who had logged on since 2016, the rest of it looked like a desert. My assets could be summed up with a level 100 Pay Day Persian, and 100k. Between 2013 and 2020, I've become a VGC player, a relatively successful one at that. For a quick background of my VGC experience at that point, my PSL 14 signup covers it: First thing I did was look for relevant guides on the forums: namely breeding, money-making, and doubles-related guides (Rakhmaninov's and OrangeManiac's mainly) in order to get a quick glance at what the meta looks like. I originally started going through Hoenn (a mistake in hindsight, I think that going through Unova first to unlock the Mistralton plots and start Lum farming would've been the best way to go) to play through the content in the near-decade hiatus I took. Once I came close to completing Hoenn, I started looking for teams that I could join to help me get started with pvp. One of the issues that I ran into at first was the fact that most pvp teams said for their applications that they wanted to do an in-game tryout before accepting people, and since I was too poor still to get myself a team, my options were limited. I did end up finding a team eventually however, and they managed to help me start to get the ball rolling. I ended up being the player with the best doubles fundamentals upon joining, but it was still something that was very useful for me because having teammates that had been playing for a while helped a lot with info that I wouldn't have otherwise such as: -Confirmation on mechanics when I wasn't sure if a certain mechanic was following gen 5 or gen 8 -The moveset differences between MMO and canon -Which players that I should look out for/study to better understand this meta -Other ways to make money that aren't necessarily covered in guides (events or investments) -Getting access through other practice methods than ladder (that's practically dead) or tours (which always happened during my work hours or when I was sleeping) Once I was done with Hoenn, I ended up going through Unova as quickly as I could to get ready to start farming Lum Berries (other berries are better in the long run, but Lums are more efficient when starting out since you sell them to Pokemart so you don't need a cash cushion to keep farming consistently). I eventually finished Sinnoh not too long before Halloween since I was told that clearing every region helps a lot for events (and I wasn't lied to). Once that was done, I didn't really take time to do gym reruns like most people recommended, because the money/time invested heavily rewards berry farming, and I personally used my time until I had the funds to get my first team to study ladder matches and past tournaments. That was basically the gist of it. After a week to a week and a half tops, I already figured out a team that I wanted to build that felt very strong on paper, got feedback that I completely ignored, and had a team carried my ass until some of the newer releases heavily nerfed the team. Overall, I'd say that my priorities mostly worked for me, and the only difference I would've made if I didn't have solid fundamentals already for pvp would've been to wait longer to have a bit more money and game time so I would've been able to be more picky on which team to join, because you would learn much quicker in a team where a lot of people know what they're doing. I knew I didn't really need much support so I knew that I could afford to be less picky since most of the relevant info I needed were things I needed to get started in general, not to get better at battling.
  8. The Alpha Steelix is in Chargestone Cave for Unova.
  9. Make sure to also include previous work experience and social security number
  10. IGN: JeanMarcH Motivation: In case of emergency, break glass. I'd prefer to be someone else's co-manager than actually manage, but if you guys think that you're short on choices (I hope not since it's PSL, of all tournaments) then go for it. Competitive Accolades: This year alone out of 3 tournaments as a manager: -PCL Champion -2nd Place NPA XI (out of 12 teams) -2nd Place VGC World Cup (out of 56 teams) Fluff: If you're a manager who might be interested to have me, here's what I offer: -Review/give a 2nd opinion on your draft plan -Help with keeping track of things during the draft, including updating the draft board -Help with dubs prep (as long as it's someone I can work with) I don't really plan on forcing any kind of draft plan since I assume I'll be less active than you, since I'll be shifting my focus back to VGC mainly for 2023, so I should be less active and be inconsistently available depending on tournament frequency. I won't really say yes to anyone until we see who the final list of managers end up being, so that's also something to keep in mind.
  11. Weezing+Slaking wasn't used much despite new toy syndrome because people realized extremely quickly that it was too gimmicky. Most of the others on the list showed at least some form of potential on more archetypes so people explored them more before realizing that they're underwhelming. And just because a Pokemon is better in more scenarios, it doesn't mean that another pokemon is completely invalidated. Hitmontop is definitely better than Mienshao in most archetypes, but on more hyper offensive teams, Mienshao fits better. There's a difference between "Mienshao should be on the same tier as Hitmontop" and "Mienshao is definitely worse than Hitmontop, but it still has a solid enough role to be ranked in viability rankings", and the 2nd is what I'm arguing for.
  12. To add on the discussion about VGC viability rankings: -Doc's tour had teams built a week or 2 after the first batch of HAs (and Competitive/Neutralizing Gas) came out, so shiny toy syndrome was over represented. -Doc's tour also had evasion clause and sleep clause, which affected usage of some Pokemon which saw significantly more usage in PCL than that (Amoonguss being a big one). -Most of the players who played in Doc's tour don't even typically use Mienshao in regular doubles, so it's not surprising that it saw almost no usage in VGC, sash had very little to do with it. -You mention Mienshao not really being good because of competing for sash, but sash isn't even a very contested item, even in the viability rankings list. If you look at the full list, 6-7 pokemon at most (potential 6th being Pelipper which isn't on the list even), most of them either have little synergy with Mienshao, aren't that great, or both. 1) Whimsicott - Can easily run a bulky set with a berry (Occa or Coba) to free the sash 2) Venusaur - if you're running Mienshao sun, you're probably running a team so offensive that you can be fine with LO or a gem on either of the 2. They definitely clash for the sash, but it wouldn't be enough to stop you from running both if you really wanted to. 3) Chandelure - Chandelure often runs other items (Gem, Life Orb) so it doesn't necessarily cause a clash here. 4) Mamoswine - That one is definitely bad enough that you probably run Hitmontop instead 5) Raichu - Was a result of new toy syndrome. Definitely overrated, probably doesn't even want sash in its optimal team. 6) Excadrill - Excadrill can easily run another item, but Mienshao also probably prefers another item because of sand being annoying. Because the sample size is so small, there is a lot of bias towards some players's preferences, which doesn't reflect proper viability, especially when half of the data compiled, if not more, is based on a different ruleset than the one the viability rankings is based on.
  13. Defog to raise evasion in doubles isn't an issue at all, even if people use it (which they really don't) a shaky strat that can be shut down by clicking Follow Me is really not an issue worth discussing. I would get it if counterplay would be extremely niche, but when such a fundamental aspect of doubles like redirection completely shuts it down, having issues against it is really a skill issue.
