yes you can go back to your previous region by talking to your "mother" in the beginner town house she'll ask you, "did you forget something at kanto/hoenn/unova?" then you can go back by selecting yes but you don't really lose the progress- you just start fresh in a new region without gym badges the first time you can take your pokemons back from the poke center
